`Deadwood' is set in a mining town that was not part of any US state or territory in the post-Civil War years, and thus was literally lawless. Deadwood attracts people looking to get rich after a huge gold strike, as well as those looking to capitalize on the lack of organized law in the town, built on land stolen from the Sioux.

Ian McShane stars in this brutal US drama, set in a lawless town where everyone's a gold-digger, from hopeful prospectors to the saloon hookers. (S1, ep 1)

Episode 2Deep Water

Gun-slinging action. Calamity Jane takes a special interest in the girl who survived the massacre, and Tom Mason is on a mission to exact revenge. (S1, ep 2)

Episode 3Reconnoitering the Rim

Pioneering television. Deadwood's fragile peace is shattered when Mr Cy Tolliver sets up a rival brothel, leaving Swearengen livid. (S1, ep 3)

Episode 4Here Was a Man

Plunder and greed have left Brom dead and Alma a widow. Desperate to get to the truth, she asks Hickok for help. (S1, ep 4)

Episode 5The Trial of Jack McCall

Villainously entertaining drama. As the jury retires to the tarts' rooms to chew over evidence, outlaw Wild Bill is laid to rest. Very strong language.

Episode 6Plague

Deadwood's sick with fear. Smallpox threatens to engulf the town but no one is well enough to get medicine. Swearengen's after Alma's gold claim. Very strong language.

Episode 7Bullock Returns to the Camp

Bullock Returns To Camp: Teenagers Miles and Flora try to play a town of goldminers, gunslingers and goodtime gals. Plus, Jack McCall gets his comeuppance. Very strong language.

Episode 8Suffer the Little Children

Tricksters Miles and Flora come to the end of the line in the lawless frontier town. Meanwhile, the smallpox vaccine arrives. Very strong language, adult scenes.

Episode 9No Other Sons or Daughters

The crime-riddled stinkhole needs an ad hoc government: enter Farnum as Mayor and Utter as Fire Commissioner. (S1, ep 9)

Episode 10Mister Wu

Swearengen's opium supplier demands blood when his shipment is stolen by two of the town's addicts. Deadpan humour punctuates a brutal episode. (S1, ep 10)
