In this three-part series Joanna Lumley travels over 2000 miles across Japan, exploring the country's mystical islands and discovering some extraordinary stories along the way. By boat, train, plane and foot, the host makes her way from Hokkaido, the `wild north', through Siberian seas to Honshu, Japan's largest and most populated island. The journey then heads south to Tohoku, where a bullet train takes Lumley to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and then to the ancient capital, Kyoto. In the south Lumley takes a walk through the remote island Shikoku and the volcanic Kyushu island, before reaching her final destination Kohama, known for its idyllic beaches.

Joanna begins a 2,000-mile journey across Japan in Hokkaido, where she meets one of the most important animals in Japanese culture, the red-crowned crane.

Joanna Lumley explores Tokyo, which was extensively rebuilt after the Second World War, and also travels to the Kiso Valley to walk an ancient route known as the Nakasendo Way.

Episode 3Joanna Lumley's Japan

Joanna visits a selection of temples to better understand Japanese Buddhism, stays in the world's first robot hotel, and gets an aerial view of one of Japan's most active volcanoes.
