Everything you need to know about Game of Thrones spin-off, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The story of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms occurs approximately a century before the events of Game of Thrones, and 100 years after the beginning of House of The Dragon.

The tale is based around characters affectionately known as ‘Dunk and Egg’ – Ser Duncan the Tall, a young but courageous knight, while Egg is his small-in-stature young squire.

Together the pair are wandering Westeros.

This time period is a state of change for the Seven Kingdoms. While the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne, they are now without dragons.

While the the last dragon is still within living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits await these two unlikely heroes.

The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s three novellas, which were later compiled into one volume called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – although most fans refer to them as The Tales of Dunk and Egg.

The Hedge Knight was released in 1998, The Sworn Sword in 2003 and The Mystery Knight in 2010.

In line with this, season one is subtitled The Hedge Knight.

How many episodes of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are there?

In the meantime, you can watch Game of Thrones (which ran for 73 episodes) or House of the Dragon (which has run for 18 and is set to return in 2026) exclusively on Sky.

By the end of the current season, House of the Dragon will have run for 18 episodes, with season three already confirmed.

How many spin-offs does Game of Thrones have?

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the third official TV show attached to the world of Game of Thrones universe.

The shows are all based in different time periods within Westero's history, detailing core periods of time that affect the world as a whole.

Game of Thrones (2011 - 2019)

Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s The Song of Ice and Fire book series and ran for eight seasons and 73 episodes.

The show chronicles key characters from the noble houses as they fight for their place on the Iron Throne – all while a long-dominant threat beyond their borders begins to rise and threatens to destroy Westeros as they know it.

Alliances are formed, tested and broken, betrayal is all too common, and bloodshed is a typical day for those involved in the battle for power.

Game of Thrones features a huge British ensemble cast of A-list stars including Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister).

House of the Dragon (2021 - Present)

House of the Dragon is set approximately 200 years before the start of Game of Thrones, and centres on the Targaryen dynasty.

In what Westeros history has referred to as the Dance of the Dragons, the story follows what happens when the ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms is split into two over an argument on who should succeed King Viserys I Targaryen.

On one side is Queen Rhaenyra, the eldest daughter of King Viserys and whom he declared to be his successor.

The other is King Aegon II, King Viserys’s eldest son, who usurped the throne upon his father’s death after encouragement from those around him as the “rightful” heir by history dictating rule to remain in male lineage.

What results is a devastating inter-family civil war where politics and family drama collide.

The cast includes Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II), Emma Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) and Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon).
