Sky Broadband Shield is our online protection tool available at no extra cost for all Sky Broadband customers.

It helps you control what your family can access online, across all devices connected to your Sky Broadband home network.

  • How do I get Sky Broadband Shield?

Sky Broadband Shield is available to all Sky Broadband customers at no extra cost. If you have a different broadband provider, or you switch from Sky, you won’t be protected by Sky Broadband Shield.

Sky Broadband Shield is switched on automatically for all new Sky Broadband customers, so if you’ve just joined us, you’ll be protected from the very first time you go online.

If you’ve been with us a while and need advice about setting up Sky Broadband Shield, see the headings in Set up and manage your settings below.

To find out more about Sky Broadband, go to Compare Sky Broadband in the UK, or Sky Broadband in the Republic of Ireland.

  • What devices does Sky Broadband Shield work with?

Sky Broadband Shield works with any device connected to your Sky Broadband home network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, including smartphones, laptops, computers, tablets and games consoles.

  • How are the parental controls on Sky Broadband Shield different from the ones on my computer?

Sky Broadband Shield works across all devices connected to your Sky Broadband network, so you don’t have to change the settings on each one individually. Plus it’s quick and easy to set up.

Not using dedicated antivirus software? Sky Broadband Shield is not an antivirus application so we recommend you install and run dedicated computer antivirus software.

Do you have Sky Broadband Unlimited or Sky Fibre? You may be eligible for a 12-month free trial of McAfee Internet Security antivirus software. Go to  McAfee Internet Security Suite for more information.

Sky Broadband 12GB customers can benefit from three months free McAfee Internet Security antivirus software.

Set up and manage your settings

  • How do I set up Sky Broadband Shield or change my age rating?

If you’ve recently joined us, your Sky Broadband Shield will be on by default, and set to age rating 13 with Watershed applied. You can change this at any time.

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD and password. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your Sky iD details or reset your password.
    2. Choose the age rating you’d like (PG, 13 or 18) and then Save all settings when you’re finished.

When you first set up Sky Broadband Shield or change any settings, we’ll send confirmation to the primary account holder by email, or send a text message if we don’t have the email address. To add an email address, go to your Household details.

As a guide, age rating PG blocks these site categories:

    • Social networking
    • Online games
    • Pornography & adult
    • Suicide & self harm
    • Weapons, violence, gore & hate
    • Anonymizers (a site that can disguise your identity online), filesharing (sites that enable you to download copyrighted material illegally) and hacking (remotely accessing a device without the owner’s permission)
    • Drugs & criminal skills
    • Dating
    • Phishing & malware

    Age rating 13 allows:

    • Social networking
    • Online games

    ..but blocks:

    • Pornography & adult
    • Suicide & self harm
    • Weapons , violence, gore & hate
    • Anonymizers, filesharing & hacking

    • Weapons , violence, gore & hate
    • Anonymizers, filesharing & hacking

  • How do I block or allow websites individually or by category?

Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your Sky iD details or reset your password. Then:

To block or allow websites by category

    1. Select Custom, then Block or Unblock as required next to each chosen website category.
    2. Select Save all settings.

To block or allow websites individually

    1. Select the Block & allow websites tab.
    2. Enter the address you’d like to block or allow in the appropriate box, and select Add.
    3. If you no longer want to restrict access to a site, select Remove next to the site address in the list.
    4. Select Save all settings.

    A few things to note:

    • Sites you block will never be viewable on any device, regardless of the time of day.
    • You won’t be able to schedule access to them using Watershed.
    • Sites you allow will always be viewable on any device, regardless of the time of day.
    • They’ll be available even if their category changes or they become malware-infected.

We’re obliged to block certain sites due to court orders we’ve received. For a list of these sites, go to Our approach to protecting copyright

  • How do I use Watershed to schedule settings for different times of the day?

Watershed allows you to apply age rating 18 protection automatically at specific hours of the day. Watershed is pre-set to operate between 9pm and 5.30am, but you can change this.

    Remember:

    • Sites you block are never available at any time, regardless of the age rating you’ve set or watershed times you’ve chosen.
    • Sites you allow are always available at any time, regardless of the age rating you’ve set or watershed times you’ve chosen.

    To manage your Watershed settings

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your details or reset your password.
    2. Select age rating of PG, 13 or Custom – Watershed cannot be enabled when the age rating is set to 18.
    3. Select the Watershed tab and select On.
    4. Choose when you’d like Watershed to start and end, then Save all settings.

When you first set up Watershed, it may take a few minutes to take effect. Your settings will then change automatically each day at the times you’ve chosen.

  • How will I know if someone changes my Sky Broadband Shield settings?

When Sky Broadband Shield settings are changed we’ll send confirmation to the primary account holder by email, or send a text message if we don’t have the email address. To add an email address, go to your Household details.

  • I have more than one child in my family. Can I choose a different level of protection for each of them?

It’s not possible to choose more than one rating for specific devices or individual members of your household.

Your chosen Sky Broadband Shield age rating setting will be applied to all devices connected to your Sky Broadband home network.

If you'd like to change your current Sky Broadband Shield settings, just sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD.

  • How do I switch off Sky Broadband Shield?

Although we don’t recommend it, you can switch Sky Broadband Shield off at any time.

However, we recommend changing the setting to age rating 18, which allows you access to sites suitable for adults while still being protected from malware-infected or phishing websites.

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your details or reset your password.
    2. Scroll down the page and select Switch off.

When you switch Sky Broadband Shield off, it may take around 15 minutes to be able view previously blocked websites.
