Sky Broadband Shield

Sky Broadband Shield is our online protection tool available at no extra cost for all Sky Broadband customers.

Sky Broadband Shield:

  • Helps you control what your family can access online, with three age rating settings, across all devices connected to your Sky Broadband home network.
  • Lets you block or allow specific websites or website categories.
  • Automatically switches to the 18 age rating during hours you choose.
  • Helps provide protection against malware-infected and phishing websites - these are sites that contain viruses or pretend to be from trusted sources, such as your bank, to trick you into providing personal details.

Getting started with Sky Broadband Shield

  • How do I get Broadband Shield?

Sky Broadband Shield is available to all Sky Broadband customers at no extra cost.

Sky Broadband Shield is switched on automatically for all Sky Broadband customers, so you’ll be protected from the very first time you go online.

  • What devices does Broadband Shield work with?

Sky Broadband Shield works with any device connected to your Sky Broadband home network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, including smartphones, laptops, computers, tablets and games consoles.

If you're browsing with 3G or 4G, you won't be protected by Sky Broadband Shield as you'll need to be connected to your home network.

As it works across all devices, you don’t have to change the settings on each one individually.

Remember: Sky Broadband Shield is not an antivirus application so we recommend you install dedicated antivirus software for each of your devices. With Sky, you may be eligible for a free trial of McAfee Internet Security antivirus software.

  • What doesn't Broadband Shield protect me from?

    • Sky Broadband Shield will not work for devices roaming on 3G/4G networks or if you're on a Wi-fi connection outside of your Sky Broadband network.
    • Sky Broadband Shield will not block access to search engines, so unsuitable sites may still appear in search results. However, most search engines allow you to set a safe searching mode from their settings menu.
    • While Sky Broadband Shield helps you control what your family accesses online, we can't guarantee that it will stop every inappropriate site or online bullying/grooming.

Using Sky Broadband Shield

  • How do I change my age rating?

By default, your Sky Broadband Shield is set to age rating 13 with Watershed applied. You can change this at any time:

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD details. If you’ve forgotten them, you can retrieve your Sky iD details or reset your password.
    2. Choose the age rating you’d like (PG, 13 or 18) and then Save all settings
    3. We’ll send confirmation to the primary account holder by email or text message. Need to change your contact details?

Remember: you can't choose different age ratings for specific devices or individual household members. Your age rating will be applied to all devices connected to your Sky Broadband home network.

As a guide, age rating PG blocks these site categories:

    • Social networking and dating
    • Online games
    • Pornography and adult
    • Suicide and self harm
    • Weapons, violence, drugs, gore and hate
    • Anonymizers (a site that can disguise your identity online), filesharing (sites that enable you to download copyrighted material illegally) and hacking (remotely accessing a device without the owner’s permission)
    • Phishing and malware

    Age rating 13 allows:

    • Social networking
    • Online games

    ..but blocks:

    • Pornography and adult
    • Suicide and self harm
    • Weapons , violence, drugs, gore and hate
    • Anonymizers, filesharing and hacking
    • Dating
    • Phishing and malware

    Age rating 18 allows:

    • Social networking and dating
    • Online games
    • Pornography and adult
    • Suicide and self harm
    • Weapons , violence, drugs, gore and hate
    • Anonymizers, filesharing and hacking

    … but blocks:

    • Phishing and malware

  • How do I block or allow websites individually or by category?

You can block or allow sites so that they will never or always be viewable on any device, regardless of the time of day or even if they become malware-infected. We update and add new websites to our categories several times a day.

Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your Sky iD details or reset your password. Then:

To block or allow websites by category

    1. Select Custom, then Block or Unblock next to each website category.
    2. Select Save all settings.

To block or allow websites individually

    1. Select the Block & allow websites tab.
    2. Enter the web address you’d like to block or allow in the appropriate box, and select Add.
    3. If you no longer want to block a site, select Remove next to the site address in the list.
    4. Select Save all settings.
Please note: certain sites will always be blocked by Sky due to court orders we’ve received. For a list of these sites, go to our approach to protecting copyright.

  • How do I schedule settings for different times of the day?

The Watershed feature allows you to apply age rating 18 protection automatically at specific hours of the day::

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your details or reset your password.
    2. Select age rating of PG13 or Custom – Watershed can't be enabled when the age rating is set to 18.
    3. Select the Watershed tab and select On.
    4. Choose when you’d like Watershed to start and end, then Save all settings. It may take a few minutes to take effect.

Please note: sites you've blocked or allowed are never or always available at any time, regardless of the watershed times you’ve chosen.

  • How will I know if someone changes my Broadband Shield settings?

When Sky Broadband Shield settings are changed we’ll send an email or text message to the primary account holder. To add an email address, go to your Household details.

  • How do I switch off Broadband Shield?

We recommend changing your age rating to 18 - you can access sites suitable for adults but you're still protected from malware-infected or phishing websites.

Although we don’t recommend it, if you still want to switch Sky Broadband Shield off:

    1. Sign in to broadbandshield.sky.com with your Sky iD. If you’ve forgotten yours, you can retrieve your details or reset your password.
    2. Scroll down and select Switch off. It may take around 15 minutes to be able to view previously blocked websites.
  • Can Sky see what I am doing on the internet if I have Sky Broadband Shield turned on?

No. We can't see what you're viewing on the internet, regardless of your Sky Broadband Shield settings.
