What happens in episode seven, ‘Killer Instincts’?
WARNING: Major spoilers for season three, episode seven ahead.
What happens in Bangkok…
In Bangkok, Frank and Rick arrive at Sritala’s house, where they meet her husband for the first time. While Frank locks in on schmoozing Sritala, Frank is hesitant as he comes face to face with the man he believes killed his father. Still under the pretence that they’re there to book Sritala for a movie, “director” Frank slips up on the details of the film, which raises the husband’s suspicions, and then falls off the wagon as he starts drinking with her.
Rick, seeing his plan going sideways, pulls her husband aside, revealing his true identity and motivations for wanting to meet with him. Rick tells him his mother’s name was Gloria Hatchett, which noticeably rings a bell with him, but the father who supposedly died as the result of a land deal falls flat. Holding a gun to the elderly man, he hesitates and instead pushes him to the ground. But seeing how frail he is, he opts not to shoot him, instead quickly leaving.
Relieved to have some level of closure, Rick throws away his gun at the request of Frank, and the pair head for a night on the town together, both engaging in alcohol and drugs, with Frank promising he’ll get back on the wagon the next day. As the night continues, Frank brings a group of girls back to their hotel room, but Rick doesn’t engage, instead smiling to himself as he watches.
Game Time
Meanwhile, back at the White Lotus, Laurie, Kate and Jaclyn go for dinner, where Fabian performs his song at the piano. However, the trio are now on awkward ground, with the resentment between Laurie and Jaclyn still seething.
When Laurie suggests they go to the Muay Thai boxing match, the argument reopens. When Jaclyn finally asks why her dalliance with Valentin bothers her so much, Laurie suggests that this is a repeated behaviour, and that she hit on Kate’s husband Dave at her wedding. Jaclyn hits back that Laurie pretends to be ‘one of life’s victims’ when in fact she’s the one responsible for her lot in life, and Kate seems to take her side on. Getting into a fight, Laurie goes to the Muay Thai fight alone. Later at their villa, Jaclyn sends some barbs Kate’s way, and they end up spending time away from each other.
Meanwhile, Gaitok takes Mook on their first date. At dinner, he shares his sadness that he won’t be able to make it as a bodyguard because he’s ‘too soft and lacks a killer instinct’. He admits he doesn’t want to be violent, preferring a peaceful life. Mook tells him it’s good to have strong morals, but as part of his job, he has to be strong in other ways. She expresses her disappointment, as she expected him to have more ambition in life.
At the match, Mook continues to push Gaitok, telling him it’s natural to want to fight. He later notices Valentin with his pals Alexei and Vlad, and realises they were the men behind the robbery at the hotel earlier in the week. Valentin had distracted him while the masked Alexei and Vlad slipped in with their van.
Laurie arrives and joins Valentin, Alexei and Vlad at the match, with Alexei taking interest in her. Flattered, she flirts back, and the pair flirt before later sleeping together at his apartment. Alexei shares that he’s overstayed his visa and once he leaves Thailand he won’t be allowed back, saying his mother is sick back home. He then starts putting pressure on her to give him the money so he can travel to see her, ignoring her protests that she doesn’t have that kind of cash. The situation is made even more awkward when Alexei’s girlfriend (last seen at the nightclub) arrives and starts banging on his door. Laurie quickly gets dressed and jumps from a window, noticing a massive stash of jewellery on the way out.
The Monastery
Piper and Lochlan spend the evening at the monastery, listening to the teachings of the monk. He warns that everyone has the capacity to kill, given the right circumstances.
At dinner, the pair remain silent, but Lochlan wolfs down the food he’s given in a way that disgusts Piper.
That night, Piper visits Lochlan in his room to ask what he thinks about the monastery. He says he supports her choice to spend the year there, and she tells him that she loves him. However, she is surprised and hesitant when he says he wants to take a gap year and join her there.
A Casual Dinner Party
Timothy Ratliff continues to knock back his wife’s lorazepam as Saxon invites him and Victoria to join them at ‘Gary’s’ dinner party. Victoria isn’t a fan of them but agrees to go in lieu of any other plans. Once there, Timothy heads straight to the bar. Saxon comments to Chelsea about the number of young women at the party dating older men, and she warns him that’ll be him in 30 years. When he pushes her why she’s so attached to Rick, she admits she hopes to heal him, finding his pain endearing and feels like they’re connected. However, she struggles to reach him on the phone.
Saxon notices his father’s depression and pulls him aside to ask what’s wrong. Deducing it’s about the business, he appeals to his father, saying that he’s nothing without the business as he has nothing else. He warns if something’s wrong then he wouldn’t know what to do. Timothy continues to insist nothing’s wrong but is clearly torn about what’s awaiting them back in the US.
Later that evening, Chloe approaches Saxon and Chelsea, telling them that Gary has a kink for voyeurism after witnessing his parents had sex as a kid, and asks Saxon to be their third and fulfil his cuckold fantasy. Saxon refuses, despite being mockingly encouraged by Chelsea.
Saxon walks Chelsea back to the White Lotus. Not giving up on her, he argues that he has a spiritual side and can show her if she lets him. Chelsea agrees to guide him through a meditation session in her room, but Saxon can’t help himself makes a move on her. She responds by giving him a handful of books to read and telling him to leave before continuing her efforts in trying to contact Rick. Saxon leaves defeated and looking lost.
Zion and Belinda are also at the dinner party, with Zion encouraging her to go to hear Gary/Greg out. Once at the party, Gary/Greg pulls Belinda aside, and insists he did not kill his late wife, but offers Belinda $100,000 to keep quiet, saying it's what Tanya would have wanted, as she often spoke about her guilt about abandoning their business proposal. Belinda flees, saying she needs to think about it. Despite Zion’s protests, she later decides she’s not comfortable taking the money knowing what she knows. In response, Zion warns her that, if she’s right, she could be in danger.
Back at their room, Timothy imagines shooting both Victoria and Saxon before killing himself. He goes to fetch the gun he still believes is stashed in their room, only to find it gone, unaware Gaitok has retrieved it.
