What happens in episode eight, ‘Amor Fati’?
WARNING: Major spoilers for season three finale ahead.
It’s the final day for our guests at The White Lotus wellness resort in Thailand, and as they wake up - some with regret, some with resolve, and some questioning what to do next – it’s clear this will be a life-changing day for everyone.
As all of the stories come to a head, here’s what happened to each of the groups – and who ends up going home in a body bag.
The Girl's Trip
At the girls’ villa, Kate and Jaclyn are feeling bad about Laurie, who they haven’t seen since the night before. Jaclyn goes to wake her up, and apologises about the Valentin situation, but a hungover Laurie brushes it off, also regretful about how the night unfolded.
Later, she spots Kate and Jaclyn joking around and taking photos in the pool together and briefly smiles as she gets dressed for the day.
At dinner that evening, the trio finally have the honest heart-to-heart they’ve been avoiding. Jaclyn admits that she doesn’t have any “real friends” like Kate and Laurie in her new life, and had been happy the entire trip as she didn’t need to keep up appearances. Laurie, in turn, admits the opposite, saying she’s been sad for the duration of the trip as she can’t hide from her past mistakes around the girls or the choices she’s made. She says she envies their lives.
With their air cleared, the girls enjoy their final night like the old friends they are, enjoying wine and laughs in their villa.
The next day, Sritala and her husband request a picture with Jaclyn for the hotel’s website and she obliges, but things take a turn when someone shoots a gun…
The Ratliffs
After their night at the monastery, Lochlan excitedly tells Piper about his hopes to join her there for the year. However, she rebukes him, saying that she “doesn’t want to f**k up his life as well as her own”.
At breakfast, despite Timothy sharing he’s proud that Piper’s learned to live with less, she breaks down to her parents, saying the food was bland and not organic, and the bed was small and gross. She’s forced to admit to herself she’s someone who enjoys their material life, despite not wanting to be, and has become accustomed to her comforts in life. Victoria cannot hide her delight, but for Timothy it is another sign that his family will never survive once they’ve lost everything.
Back at the villa, Saxon and Lochlan spend alone time for the first time since their awkward threesome with Chloe. Saxon tells his brother that ‘no one will make him a man, he needs to do it himself’ before heading off to the beach. Lochlan asks if he’s mad at him, and Saxon says he can’t ‘worship him’ in reference to their incestuous tryst. Lochlan tells Saxon he only did it because he’s a “people pleaser” and he looked left out in the moment.
At the beach, Saxon runs into Chloe and Chelsea, and he shares that he’s nearly finished one of the books Chelsea gave him already. Chelsea is surprised, and talks about connections, and Saxon looks smitten, but is left disappointed once again when she spots Rick on the beach, running into his arms.
Back at the villa, Timothy asks Lochlan if he could live with no money, and Lochlan says he believes he can. When his son leaves, Timothy speaks to his health mentor about the poisonous fruit on the tree outside. She informs him that the seeds are deadly, and he begins to harvest them.
Grinding up the seeds in the blender, Timothy hides it for future use, that evening requesting the staff to bring ingredients for pina coladas to the villa. He mixes drinks for all but Lochlan – telling him it’s because he’s underage - but when they start to drink, he panics, smacking it out of their hands and declaring the coconut milk has gone bad.
There are still some remnants left in the unwashed blender though, and the following morning Lochlan uses it to make a morning protein shake, drinking it up and falling sick as the others head to breakfast. Alone outside the villa, he begins convulsing on the floor and has visions of drowning as monks stare at him from beyond the surface. Tim, who had been asleep, finds Lochlan’s body by the pool and desperately tries to revive him.
Thankfully, Lochlan pulls through and tells his father that he saw God. Relieved, Tim cradles his son.
On the boat on the way home, Victoria excitedly gives everyone back their phones, but before they switch them on, Timothy warns them that ‘things are about to change but they’ll get through it as a family’ and ‘nothing is more important than family.’
Rick and Chelsea
In Bangkok, Rick says goodbye to his friend Frank, who is still locked in a drink-and-drug fuelled bender from the night before, and heads back to the White Lotus, and Chelsea, with a clear head.
Delighted to see him, Chelsea runs into Rick’s arms, and he tells her the ‘monkey is off his back’ after his meeting with Sritala’s husband. Ready to move on, the pair start planning their future together, with Rick finally admitting he sees them together “forever” - a gesture that moves Chelsea to tears.
Chelsea said she wasn’t too worried because of ‘amor fati’, which means to embrace fate whichever way it comes, and she was certain their fates were tied together.
But their moment of peace is short-lived as Sritala and her husband, Jim, arrive back at the White Lotus. Jim corners Rick at the breakfast buffet and calls his mother a drunk, a slut and a liar, telling Rick he was sold a fairy tale and missed out on nothing when it came to his father. He then flashes a holstered gun and tells Rick to leave. Shaken, Rick returns to Chelsea at the table, and while she encourages him to let it go, he can’t. She begs him not to do something stupid, and the pair retreat into the hotel grounds as Jim sends his security men after them. Rick tries to talk to his meditation specialist, but she is busy with Zion as asks for him to wait until afterwards.
As Sritala and Jim meet with Jaclyn for their picture, Rick makes the decision to make a move towards them, despite Chelsea’s pleas for him not to. He tells her to leave, before grabbing Jim’s gun while he is distracted, shooting him. As Sritala cradles her dying husband she delivers the true killer blow to Rick: Jim was his father all along.
Commanding her bodyguards to kill Rick, a shootout begins, prompting everyone in the resort to run for cover. Hearing the commotion, Gaitok grabs his gun. While Rick manages to take out the bodyguards, Chelsea is shot by a stray bullet and dies in his arms. Devastated, he picks up her body, and he promises they’ll ’be together forever’.
The Staff
Gaitok has a lot weighing on his mind, having come to realise that Valentin and his friends are behind the store robbery. He tells Mook about his plans to tell his boss, which pleases her, but Valentin later confronts him, begging him not to say anything. He argues the men have no means to make money on the island, and being sent home is almost certain death.
Gaitok heads to pray for guidance, and later shares with Mook that he may have to quit, believing he’s not cut out to be a guard. She tells him to be practical and stop overthinking, believing he shouldn’t start at the bottom. Once again, unable to hide her disappointment, she shrugs off his request for a second date.
When Sritala arrives, Gaitok is once again mocked by her bodyguards, and he decides quitting is his best option. His manager, Pee Lek, encourages him to reconsider and think about it for a few hours.
Turns out a lot can happen in a few hours – and when the shootout begins, Gaitok runs to Sritala’s aid. Following her instruction, he shoots Rick, who is carrying Chelsea’s body, twice in the back. Both Rick and Chelsea fall into the water together, dead.
Sometime later, Gaitok is seen embracing Mook, and is show to have been promoted to bodyguard. Gaitok keeps Valentin and the boys’ secret, and the group are seen partying with a new group of women, seemingly carrying on the same grift they had with Jaclyn, Kate and Laurie.
Belinda and Zion
Following Greg’s proposal to give her $500,000 in hush money, Belinda and Zion weigh out the options – with the life-changing sum having somewhat of an effect on her moral code. Zion encourages her to ask for more, believing she could negotiate a payout twice as large, which would help her launch the business she desperately wanted with Tanya.
She also introduces her son to Pornchai, and Zion realises how much they like each other, and how they could start their dream business together.
Belinda and Zion return to Greg’s house to negotiate, with Zion confidently using his business skills to negotiate on his mother’s behalf. To his mother’s surprise, Zion asks for $5million, instead of the $1million they had previously mooted. He reveals he’s been researching Tanya and knows she was worth half a billion dollars. He argues that it’s just 1% of that would be worth it for ‘peace of mind’. Belinda walks off, seemingly furious at Zion, but it turns out it’s a ruse to make Greg sweat.
After that, it’s just a case of waiting for his decision and keeping an eye on Belinda’s bank account. Shockingly, Greg obliges her, and in turn she agrees to keep his location a secret. Later, Greg is seen watching on as Chloe seeks out a third at yet another of his parties.
Deciding it’s too dangerous to remain in Thailand in case Greg changes his mind about her and ecstatic at their windfall, Belinda and Zion decide to leave the island together the next day. Belinda has a final meeting with Pornchai, ironically casting him aside just as Tanya did to her back in season one. A devastated Pornchai waves her off as she and Zion leave the island, while Billy Preston’s ‘Nothing from Nothing’ plays the series out.
