The Trip to Spain: Season 3 Guide Hero Image

Three years after their last getaway, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are reuniting for a new food tour – this time The Trip to Spain.

With Steve making a return to the UK after working in New York, and Rob becoming disillusioned with life as a family man with a wife and two kids, it seems the perfect opportunity for some time away.

But as Steve approaches his 50th birthday, and Rob already there, reflections of midlife become prominent (when they’re not debating each other, having singsongs on their car journeys or warring over their impersonations).

Originally airing in 2017, here’s what you need to know about the third series of the pair’s culinary adventures and how it played out.

How can I watch The Trip?

The Trip series 1-4 are available to watch via Sky now.

Series one and two are available on BBC iPlayer (which you can access via Sky), while three and four are on Sky Comedy.

The Trip to the Northern Lights was announced in June 2025, with filming set to commence later in the year.

The Trip to Spain: Episodes Recap

The Trip to Spain runs for six, half-hour episodes, and starts with Steve receiving a call from Rob – this time offering him a string of food reviews around Spain for the New York Times and Observer. Now with two kids, Rob immediately says yes to the chance of a getaway.

Episode 1 - ‘Txoko’

With Steve back in his trusty Range Rover, Steve and Rob grab a ferry and head to Santander – though Steve’s sea legs on the cabin leave a lot to be desired.

From there, they head to the Cave of Altamira, but are disappointed to find out that they can’t get in, leading them to try and use their fame to barter with their tour guide.

After that, they visit the picturesque port of Getaria for dinner at the Txoko restaurant, where they discuss turning 50, Steve’s dalliance with an older woman during his travels to Spain as a teenager, and how they compare to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

When their dining experience is ruined by a sudden torrential downpour, all the team scramble, but Steve has questions for Rob about the woman he met while in Italy. Back at home, Steve receives news that could majorly affect his US work.

Episode 2 - ‘Etxebarri’

Steve makes a frustrated call to his UK agent demanding answers, before he joins Rob at breakfast to lay out the trip ahead.

Heading through Basque Country, the duo dine on an eight-course tasting menu at Michelin-starred restaurant Etxebarri.

Steve brings along with him some Laurie Lee in order to emulate the playwright and poet’s work.

After that, the pair head towards Sos del Rey Católico, with ABBA taking over their playlist as they do so.

Episode 3 - ‘La Posada del Laurel’

As the pair grab breakfast together, they think over their own personal Holy Grails before getting back on the road and serenade each other Mitch Leigh’s The Impossible Dream.

Over lunch, the pair reflect on the megastars lost in 2016… before naturally trying to impersonate them.

Stopping off to see the attractions of Dinosaur Road, Rob takes a picture to send to his daughter back home, before they head to the hotel where Steve receives more aggravating news about his latest project.

Episode 4 - ‘Nöla’

Over breakfast, Rob reflects on a way around going white-water rafting with young son Charlie, after learning he’ll be too old by the time he’s old enough to do it.

Dropping by the Cathedral of Sigüenza, the pair see an exhibition on Cervantes and Shakespeare, including the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s work in a case similar to an 80s album cover.

Dining at Nöla restaurant, they discuss how they would fare on the front line of war and whether Steve could get away with playing Hamlet.

Steve and Rob then head to Cuenca where Steve gets annoyed by a travelling musician, and they both get updates from agents regarding their work back home.

Episode 5 - ‘Parador de Almagro’

For the next stop on their trip, Steve and Rob head to La Mancha, where they meet up with Steve’s manager Emma and photographer Yolanda for a photoshoot, dressed as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza – complete with horses and armour.

After that, the four head to lunch, where Yolanda shares more about her past and Rob and Steve show off their Mick Jagger and David Bowie impressions.

From there, they tread the boards at the Corral de Comedias and do some sightseeing, taking in some cave art that’s 14,000 years old before heading to the Parador Hotel: the burial place of Ferdinand and Isabella. As Steve settles in for the night, he gets a Skype call from his son, Joe, who tells him he’s unable to join him due to some unexpected news.

Episode 6 - ‘El Refectorium’

In the final leg of their trip, Steve shares his news from home with Emma and Rob before hitting the road to Malaga.

Still hung up on what he’s heard, Steve reflects on life with his son and what they planned to do together on the trip, prompting Rob and Emma to try and cheer him up.

Over lunch, Rob and Steve try to hone their Roger Moore and Sir Ian McKellan impressions, before they take in one last drink overlooking the city before they return home.

As Steve continues to dwell on Joe being absent as he heads to his final hotel alone, life deals him one last bit of upsetting news, leaving him with a decision to make.
