Henry and Clare’s relationship is a story for the ages in The Time Traveler’s Wife – in fact, multiple ages.
With Henry drifting in and out of Clare’s life through no fault of his own, both are in need of support systems to keep themselves together.
Here are the key people that helped bring this story to life…
Henry DeTamble
Played by: Theo James (The White Lotus, The Gentlemen), Jason David (For All Mankind, General Hospital) and Brian Altemus (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, Shelter).
The titular time traveller, Henry was born with a rare genetic condition that means he zips through time without warning, especially when under moments of stress. His first experience of time travel was at the age of seven. By 28, he works in a library in order to go unnoticed should he suddenly disappear.
Through the multiple versions of Henry we meet, we realise that his ability has made him a solitary, impulsive and selfish person during his 20s. But then he meets Clare, and knowing the person he is destined to become, everything changes.
Clare Abshire
Played by: Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, The Good Fight), Everleigh McDonnell (Truth Be Told, Good Girls), Caitlin Shorey (Mr Harrigan’s Phone).
Clare is the daughter of a rich family, who has a creative flair and is a natural romantic. She first encountered Henry at the age of six, when he appeared to her in a field on the grounds of her home. She has kept his visits a secret ever since.
By the time their timelines cross and she meets him as an adult, she is aware she will become his wife – though Henry has no clue. She is an art student with a thriving social life. She has expectations of their relationship from the outset, knowing destiny has fated her and Henry to be together.
Gomez
Played by: Desmin Borges (You’re the Worst, Utopia)
Gomez is one of Claire’s best friends as she navigates life as an adult – and is not-so-secretly in love with her. As a result, he is wary of Henry, who disappears in and out of her life seemingly at whim, and wants more for her.
However, as years progress, he becomes an essential friend for Henry, particularly when she finds out about his condition.
Charisse
Played by: Natasha Lopez (Runner Runner, How Did That Happen?)
Clare’s roommate during her studies, Charisse is no-nonsense and isn’t afraid to say what she thinks about certain situations. So when Henry arrives in Clare’s life, she has a lot of questions about him. During this period of time, she is dating Gomez.
Annette DeTamble
Played by: Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass)
Annette DeTamble is Henry’s mother, and at one point was a famous opera singer. She is unaware of her son’s abilities, with a tragic accident involving her and Henry triggering his first experience with time travel.
Philip Abshire
Played by: Michael Park (As The World Turns, Stranger Things)
Philip Abshire is Clare’s father and is a high-powered and well-revered lawyer. As a result, he takes image very seriously, and that extends to his family, whom he rules over with an iron fist.
Lucille Abshire
Played by: Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick, Little Fires Everywhere)
Lucille Abshire is Clare’s mother. She is friendly, but allows Philip to take the lead when it comes to her family and isn’t the maternal figure she likes to proclaim to the world to be. However, she and Clare share creative streaks, with Lucille enjoying writing poetry. The family home is the same one she grew up in.
Ingrid
Played by: Chelsea Frei (The Moodys, The Paper)
Ingrid is Henry’s on-again/off-again girlfriend before he met Clare. She has a fiery personality and has a tendency to be chaotic, but it is to hide a very fragile self-esteem which isn’t helped by her turbulent relationship with Henry. She is aware of Henry’s condition and has a tragic future ahead of her.
