Setting up Sky Q

Set up a new Sky Q box

Unpack your new Sky Q box

Remove your new Sky Q box, and any remotes and cables, from the packaging.

If your new box is a replacement for an old Sky Q box, pack up your old Sky Q box, HDMI cable, power cable, and any remotes into the packaging your new box came in, and hand it to your delivery driver who’ll return it to us. Or, if you’re in the ROI, return your old box to us via Anpost.

Returning to Sky within 18 months of leaving? If you’ve still got your old box, instead of handing it to your delivery driver, you’ll need to return it using the returns packaging we sent you. Check out our returns guide for more help with this, including how to get more packaging if you’ve lost what we sent you.

Don’t return your dish cables or viewing card, as you’ll need those for your new box. If you accidentally send your viewing card back to us, you’ll need to call us for a new one, and may be charged.

Plug in your new Sky Q box

Plug in your replacement Sky Q box using the new power and HDMI cables provided, and your existing dish cables:

  1. Connect your dish cable(s) by inserting the copper pin of the cable into the back of the box and turning the metal nut clockwise
  2. Plug the pink end of the HDMI cable into the pink port on the back of your Sky Q box, then plug the other end into your TV
  3. Plug the blue end of the power cable into the blue port on the back of your Sky Q box, then plug the other end into the mains.

Once all the cables are securely connected, put your viewing card into the slot on the right-hand side of your box, chip first with the chip facing up.

Finally, make sure there are batteries in your new Sky Q remote.

Make sure the Sky box/Router is well ventilated and:

  • Avoid placing it on a carpet or in an enclosed space like a cabinet. Allow at least 10cm of space above and on all sides.
  • Don't stack other devices on top of, underneath, or beside the Sky box/Router.
  • Keep the Sky box/Router away from heat, such as vents on electronic devices, radiators and direct sunlight.

Switch on your box

Switch your new Sky Q box on at the mains and make sure your TV is on and on the right HDMI input. If nothing appears on screen, make sure your cables are securely connected and try a different HDMI input until you find the right one.

Once your box is switched on and the on-screen start-up messages have disappeared, press Home on your Sky Q remote.

Remotes should not be stored in warm places. For example not on top of the Sky Box or other electrical equipment. They should be handled with care.
