In 1842, change is coming to the rural Cheshire town of Cranford, and its residents are all astir. The community faces challenges from the rapidly approaching railway, built largely with immigrant labour, and a new doctor in town, who advocates innovative medical techniques. The period drama, based on a trio of novels by Elizabeth Gaskell, follows the upheaval faced by the residents and how they react to the spectre of change as the Industrial Age bears down on their town.

Period drama. Dr Harrison finds his career ruined and his courtship destroyed. Miss Matty receives devastating news, but the ladies of Cranford rally to help.
