What happens in And Just Like That... Season 3’s Finale, ‘Party of One’?
Warning: Major spoilers ahead
It’s the final ever episode of And Just Like That, and Thanksgiving is fast approaching for Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and the gang.
As the big event draws near, here’s how the series finale played out.
Carrie
Carrie, grabbing some lunch alone, decides to head to a new Japanese restaurant in Manhattan – but immediately feels out of her depth as robot servers make their way around the restaurant, and she’s not sure what to order.
However, the biggest offensive moment comes when Tommy Tomato – a stuffed toy – is plonked opposite her, with a sprightly human server telling her they did it so she “didn’t have to dine alone”. Naturally, Carrie is left open-mouthed at her shocking new date… and far from impressed.
She later vents the shame she felt to the girls when they head to a bridal runway event together. After, she walks home with Charlotte, saying that she has to face the idea of being alone forever – and that’s the first time she had to acknowledge that, as in the past she’s never been alone for long. Reflecting on her relationship with Aidan and romance with Duncan, she says she needs to learn to accept life by herself.
The next day, Carrie speaks to Adam about his feelings towards Seema as he tends to her garden. Adam assures her that he sees Seema as “a lifetime”.
Carrie darts around her to see her friends, dropping off pies for each of them as a Thanksgiving day treat – stopping by Charlotte’s, Seema’s and Anthony’s before finally arriving at Miranda’s.
However, she’s left to pay host alongside Brady, with guests including Brady’s baby mama Mia, two of her friends, Silvio and Epcot, who are full of dietary demands and unimpressed with Brady, and Charlotte’s boss Marcus Kasabian – an unexpected addition who was invited by Charlotte and makes no secret of flirting with Carrie. As Silvio and Epcot continue to make them uncomfortable with a dance performance, the pair get to drinking, and accidentally ruin the turkey by taking it out too early, leaving them all with just seaweed to eat.
Miranda
Miranda grabs dinner with Steve, who politely turns down her invitation to Thanksgiving. They then talk about Brady’s upcoming baby news, and the less-than-desirable baby mama. The former couple reflect on how they raised their son, worried about what lies ahead for Brady.
Miranda’s dreams of a full house for Thanksgiving quickly dissolves with people dropping out fast. Anthony wants to speak to Giuseppe about their relationship in private, Charlotte and Harry want a small family affair, and now Joy, her girlfriend, was going to be a no-show too because one of her dogs is sick.
While Miranda initially thinks Joy is avoiding the family dynamic, having been witness to a huge argument between her and Brady, Miranda is relieved to find out that she was actually telling the truth – but then feels overwhelmed with guilt and rushes to the vet to be with Joy. Thankfully, her pup is going to be OK.
By the time she gets back, Thanksgiving has descended into disaster, and when a series of unfortunate events causes the toilet to overflow, the whole thing collapses and everyone goes home.
She does get a minor win though, with Mia sticking up for her when Brady chastises her in front of the group. Brady then decides to have Thanksgiving with his dad.
As Miranda cleans up the toilet problem, Carrie sticks around for a chat, before Joy turns up to see her, wanting to spend time with her family. Overcome with emotion, Miranda starts crying, and Joy kneels down in the mess to hug her.
Charlotte
With Charlotte and Harry’s sex life still stalled in the wake of Harry’s prostate cancer operation, she confides in Lisa about her trouble, though notes she feels it ‘isn’t about her right now’.
The next morning, as she starts preparing the Thanksgiving turkey, Harry rushes up to her with some news: he’s “got his groove back”. Not wanting to waste it, the pair rush off to the bedroom, leaving Lily to set the table and answer the door to Carrie, who had come to pick up stuffing for Miranda and drop off her traditional pie gift.
When Charlotte drops by Miranda’s house to drop the stuffing off, Carrie tells her she’s going to kill her, before pulling her into the bedroom to discuss what she was thinking by inviting Marcus. Charlotte admits that she wanted to set them up because she “thought they had a connection”. And even though he’s a three-time divorcé, he has a plane.
Lisa
Meanwhile, Lisa is busy finishing up editing her documentary alongside the handsome Marion when she gets a call. Michelle Obama, who she’s been trying to land throughout the series, has turned down the opportunity to appear as she feels she’s too big a name to be in a documentary on unsung Black women heroes – but will, if she likes the first cut, agree to be narrator for the series.
Delighted, Marion and Lisa hug, with their sexual tension clearly rising. Marion invites her for a drink to celebrate, but Lisa shuts him down – finally acknowledging the elephant in the room and telling him that they need to keep things about work as they are both married. Marion agrees, saying that he doesn’t want to ruin their working relationship.
However, with Herbert still moping after losing the election, she’s frustrated in her marriage, and admits to Charlotte she wants him to return to work. Despite it, she can’t deny that she has no regrets getting married, and when she gets home, she shares her feelings with Herbert, who promises he’ll get over his slump soon.
Seema
Loved up with Adam and finally settled, Seema finally finds an issue in their relationship: Adam doesn’t believe in marriage, and doesn’t ever want to tie the knot.
Sharing the news with Carrie, Seema is forced to question if she’s happy to never get married, admitting it’s something she always expected to happen – though largely because her family taught her to want it. She asks Carrie why she wanted it, and Carrie says it was because it meant she was chosen. Seema notes if it is Adam’s responsibility to make her feel chosen.
Final Chapter
With Thanksgiving now over, Carrie heads to her Gramercy Park home, and turns on the karaoke machine to play some music – choosing Barry White’s You’re The First, My Last, My Everything.
As Carrie dances around her house in joy, her friends settle down for an evening with their families – each eating the pies Carrie gave them for Thanksgiving. Charlotte shares a wholesome moment with Harry, Rock and Lily looking over photos from Rock’s school play; Herbert takes over the cleaning up for Lisa, feeling more positive; Anthony gets splatted in the face by Giuseppe for suggesting he needs to be mothered; while Seema meets Adam’s family.
Following her publisher’s advice, Carrie decides to give her book a hopeful epilogue: but on her own terms. As she notes that while her “character” (which is definitely based on her) may be on her own, she is not alone.
And then she dances off-screen to an uncertain future.
