True Detective Night Country: Soundtrack

True Detective: Night Country was a whole new world for the franchise – and we’re not just talking about the new location.

After three seasons in the music supervisor role, T Bone Burnett was replaced by Susan Jacobs to provide the sounds of the series – with showrunner Issa Lopez giving a helping hand on what she wanted.

With the series decidedly more feminine than its three male-led counterparts, the team made sure the music reflected this as best as possible… starting with the ominous theme song which paved the way for the show ahead.

Here’s what you need to know about the soundtrack - including all the songs and the theme that captured the minds of viewers everywhere.

True Detective: Night Country’s theme song is ‘Bury A Friend’ by Billie Eilish from her 2019 debut album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’.

Showrunner and season creator Issa Lopez said she was listening to the album on repeat during lockdown, when she was writing the scripts for Night Country.

She was also keen to continue the True Detective tradition of having a strong song for the theme that encapsulates the tone episodes of the episode, declaring to IndieWire the song was “just really f**king nicely female.”

“It’s such a dark, moody, fun, sinister little song that I thought it could absolutely work,” she added. “I love the fact that it’s so unexpected. It doesn’t seem that we are going to suddenly cut to Billie Eilish, but it just works so well.

“[The title sequence] had to be just as memorable [as past seasons], but also its own thing.”
