
Who is Gary Neville?
Gary Neville, born in 1975, is a former right-back football player famed for spending his entire career with Manchester United.
He is widely celebrated as one of the best footballers in the history of the UK, and also the one of the most decorated having won 20 trophies with his team throughout his career.
The star comes from a sporty family, with his father, Neville Neville, being a former league cricketer, while his mum Jill was a club secretary for Bury Football Club.
His younger brother, Phil Neville, was also a long-standing member of Man U, while his younger sister Tracey was an international netballer.
At school, he initially showed promise to follow in his father’s footsteps as a cricketer, before moving over to football.
Neville officially retired from football in 2011, becoming a pundit for Sky Sports which became a permanent job from the 2016 to 2017 season.
He has hosted podcast The Overlap in association with Sky Sports since 2021.
He married wife Emma in 2007, and together they have two daughters.
Manchester United career
Neville first joined Manchester United as an apprentice in 1991, shortly after leaving school.
Within his first season, he was made captain of the youth team, winning the FA Youth Cup. Other players on the team that year included David Beckham, Simon Davies, Robbie Savage, Keith Gillespie, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt.
In September 1992, he made his senior team debut, and trained under Sir Alex Ferguson. He would later make a formidable team with Beckham on the right side of the pitch.
By the ‘94-’95 season, he was first-choice right-back, replacing Paul Parker.
During his tenure at the club, he served as club captain for five years, taking over from Roy Keane in late 2005.
In 2010, after a series of injuries and infrequent appearances on the team, he stepped down from the team captaincy.
Neville had his last game with Manchester United on New Year’s Day 2011, officially announcing his retirement a month later.
At the time of his retirement, he had created a legacy and highly decorated career at the club, that included eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two Champions Leagues, and Intercontinental Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and two League Cups.
England Squad career
Neville made his debut as part of the England squad in 1995, and had a continued position on the team for more than 10 years.
During that time, he represented England during the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Euros and 1998 and 2006 World Cups. He was ruled out of the 2002 World Cup due to injury.
While he largely remained a right-back, he was at times called on to take different roles within the squad – including being a winger during Euro ‘96.
He and brother Phil were the first siblings to represent the country at the same time in 119 years.
Neville appeared on the team for a total of 85 games, making him England’s most-capped right back of all time. He also holds the record for most England appearances for the European Championship finals (totalling 11).
After his retirement, he continued to remain with the squad as an assistant manager from 2012 to 2016.
Valencia
For a brief period between December 2015 and March 2016, Neville moved to Spain and took over the position of head coach for Valencia.
The move was considered a bizarre one by pundits in Spain and England alike – notably because Neville openly admits he couldn’t speak Spanish.
While under Neville’s guidance, Valencia suffered a nine-game losing streak, including a 7-0 defeat to Barcelona while competing in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals.
Although the team would later go on to win three matches under his reign, after just three months, he was sacked from the position that March.
Other notable career highlights
Alongside Ryan Giggs, Neville launched GG Hospitality in 2013, opening Café Football in Stratford, London in 2013.
The pair bought the Northern Stock Exchange Building that year, and was later turned into a boutique hotel.
Hotel Football, which overlooks Manchester United’s grounds, opened in March 2015.
In 2014, Neville became the co-owner of Salford City FC, alongside billionaire businessman Peter Lim, as well as Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and brother Phil.
In September 2019, Neville joined forces again with Phil, Giggs, Scholes and Butt to found University Academy 92 at Old Trafford.
The higher education school was “designed to enhance life skills as well as employability” offering courses beyond the typical scope of degrees.
It was named in honour of the “Class of ‘92” - as all five were members of the Manchester United Youth Cup winners of that year.
