The Day of the Jackal: Five things we learned from the first teaser trailer Hero Image

Eddie Redmayne is turning killer in slick new Sky Original drama, The Day of the Jackal - with the first look trailer luring you into his cool and calculated world.

Based on the seminal 1971 novel by Frederick Forsyth and subsequent award-winning 1973 film from Universal Pictures, this series will see Redmayne as the titular assassin, who finds a detective hot on his heels, determined to track him down by any means necessary.

However, this is no easy feat, as this lone wolf has skills like no other when it comes to evading the law, and keeping his identity hidden.

With the intense first teaser now out in the world, here’s everything we learned in the one-minute trailer of the dramatic reimagining of a literary classic.

The Cast

Eddie Redmayne leads the cast as the titular Jackal – who is seen to be someone with a knack of blending into a crowd, making him virtually undetectable when he is hired as a hitman.

A star of stage and screen, Redmayne is an Oscar-winning actor best known for roles in Les Misérables, The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

By the time of the show’s release, he will have just completed a stint on Broadway as Emcee in a revival of Cabaret.

Lashana Lynch is playing Bianca, the detective hot on The Jackal’s heels – but it seems her hunt will reach a dangerous level of obsession that could come at a great personal cost.

Lynch is a British actress, best known for her roles in Captain Marvel and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Woman King, Matilda: The Musical, and No Time to Die.

The third key cast member and character is Úrsula Corberó as Nuria. The teaser does not give away much about her character, apart from her intimate connection to The Jackal.

Corberó is a Spanish actress who has been working for more than 20 years, but earned international acclaim for her role as ‘Tokyo’ in Netflix 2018 smash-hit Money Heist (La Casa de Papel).

She has since starred in shows including Snatch, Burning Body, and Mr and Mrs Smith.

The Hunter Vs The Hunted

Central to the story is the international cat-and-mouse chase The Jackal and Bianca find themselves in.

This first look alone promises trips around the European coast and luxury rural villas, through to the streets of London and Paris.

Putting its own unique spin on Hunter Vs Hunted, The Day of the Jackal will clearly see two unstoppable forces going head-to-head for their own causes.

Now it’s just a case of which one will come out on top.

An Unrecognisable Eddie Redmayne

We are warned by Lynch’s detective Bianca that The Jackal never looks the same way twice.

While we’re yet to see the full scope of his disguises, it’s obvious we’re about to witness Eddie Redmayne like never before.

We’re teased with just how elaborate these alternative looks can be, with The Jackal peeling prosthetics from his face, and taking a razor to his head.

Keep your eyes peeled – he could be anyone.

The Stunt Work

A skilled assassin needs to have three things in order to perfectly execute a plan.

The first: a desire to go to any lengths necessary to secure the target.

The second: the perfect weapon.

And finally: the perfect escape plan.

In this one minute teaser alone we’re witness to how far The Jackal takes his missions.

Expect nail-biting car chases, explosions, Redmayne hanging from the rafters of a theatre, boat races and even abseiling down a building as he gets to work.
