What is The Ballad of Wallis Island about?
Based on a 2008 BAFTA-award winning short movie, The Ballad of Wallis Island follows musician Herb McGwyer after he receives a performance opportunity from a super fan that changes his life.
Part of moderately successful folk duo McGwyer Mortimer in the early 2000s, Herb is now chasing the fame he once had, now focusing on pop music. The thing is, most people have forgotten all about him – except for Charles Heath, an eccentric millionaire who pays him £500,000 for a one-off performance at his home on Wallis Island.
Arriving on the remote island off the coast of Wales, excitable Charles – whose money came from winning the lottery twice – has fond memories of McGwyer Mortimer, with their music soundtracking a round-the-world trip with his late wife, Marie.
For Herb, this is a payday he can’t pass up, seeing it as a ticket to get his next album financed. But things aren’t quite as he expected. For starters, it turns out the “intimate” performance is actually just for Charles. On top of that, Nell – Herb’s ex and former bandmate – has also been invited alongside her new husband, Michael.
As the group spend a few days alone together, old memories return for them all as they navigate different kinds of love and letting go and create something new from it.
Shot in Wales across 18 days, The Ballad of Wallis Island features original music from creators Tim Key and Tom Basden.
