Adapted by Heidi Thomas from the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this drama series is a moving look at midwifery and family life in the late 1950s and early 1960s in East End London. Initially the series follows newly qualified midwife Jenny Lee, who is surprised to find herself at a convent alongside nuns who are working as midwives and nurses in the local community. As the series progresses, the nurses navigate revolutionary changes in healthcare as well as social changes in post-war Britain.
