DI Jimmy Perez is a native Shetlander who has returned to the islands with a desire to protect the archipelago from inevitable change. Together with his trusted colleagues, Perez works on a number of challenging cases, including one which involves the remains of a missing person which are found at various locations along the beachfront. After helping to solve a range of cases, Perez resigns from service and is replaced by another officer returning to the islands after a long absence, DI Ruth Calder.
