`Chain of Command' is an intimate portrait of what has been dubbed "the war of this generation" - the US military's mission to combat violent extremism around the world - and the men and women devoting their lives to it. Filmed over 18 months, the eight-part documentary allows viewers unprecedented access inside the Pentagon to see how decisions made there have a direct impact on service members fighting on the front lines to protect Americans and US allies from radicalised extremists. The series also includes a rare on-camera sit-down with Gen Joseph Dunford Jr, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Episode 2Perception and Reality

As the battle for Western Mosul begins, a unit prepares to deploy to Afghanistan. Young people leave the Caribbean island of Trinidad to fight for ISIS. (S1, ep 2)

Episode 3Shoulder to Shoulder

While the battle for Mosul rages in Iraq, American and Colombian agents fight to prevent ISIS from reaching US shores. (S1, ep 3)

Episode 4The End of the Beginning

The battle for Mosul may be nearly won, but ISIS's ideology spreads. They recruit fighters from far and wide, including Trinidad and Tobago. (S1, ep 4)

Marines return to advise the Afghan army as they struggle to fight against the Taliban. Meanwhile, one officer watches on Skype as his son is born back home. (S1, ep 5)

While US marines assist the Afghan National Army, The Pentagon tries to crack down on extremist threats across the globe. Special operations forces head to Africa. (S1, ep 6)

On an aircraft carrier off Syria, troops hope air strikes will finish off ISIS. In Afghanistan, forces try to root out extreme corruption in the Afghan army. (S1, ep 7)

Tragedy strikes as US Special Forces work with locals to combat extremists in Niger. Meanwhile, marines prepare to return home from Afghanistan. (S1, ep 8)
