What is Landscape Artist of the Year?

Landscape Artist of the Year sees up-and-coming artists show off their talents as showcase their unique creative vision using some of the most stunning and historic locations in the UK.

Armed with their easels, canvases and art tools, our carefully selected entrants compete across six heats as they head to landmarks across the country, tasked with interpreting the scenes with their own artistic flair.

Adding to the stakes, the artists will be joined by up to 50 ‘wildcard’ artists, who join the competitors in a bid to land the one and only wildcard place in the semi-finals.

Once completed, the artists will turn their easels to reveal their work, before our panel of esteemed judges critique and select who makes it through to the semi-finals.

The winner will receive a £10,000 commission to produce an artwork that will go on public display at a National Institution, which changes every year, as well as £500 of art supplies from Cass Art.

This year marks the show’s eleventh competition with filming locations including Dover Castle in Kent, The Lake District in Cumbria, The Thames from HMS Wellington in London, The Ouse Valley Viaduct in Sussex and The Falkirk Wheel in Scotland.

The winner will receive a £10,000 commission for the National Gallery of Ireland and will create a landscape of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo – the country’s holy mountain.

How long has Landscape Artist of the Year run for?

Landscape Artist of the Year first launched in 2015 and has been running annually since then.

He has been leading both Portrait and Landscape Artist of the Year series since 2018.

Mangan was previously joined by broadcaster, playwright and author Baroness Joan Bakewell as his co-host. Her final series was in 2023, when she became one of the surprise guests the artists were tasked with painting.

Frank Skinner was the original host of the competition, hosting series one to three.

Who are the judges of Landscape Artist of the Year 2026?

Portrait Artist of the Year is judged by JuTai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano, and new addition to the panel, Eva Langret.

Kathleen Soriano is an arts curator, broadcaster, and chair of Arts UK. She was the director of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts from 2008 to 2014.

JuTai Shan Schierenberg is a British portrait artist, TV presenter, and founder of the Painting department at Art Academy London. Several of his works are currently held in the National Portrait Gallery, including his portraits of Lord Carrington, Lord Sainsbury and Seamus Heaney.

Eva Langret has been Artistic Director of Frieze London since 2019 and is Vice Chair of Camden Art Centre. She previously worked at Tiwani Contemporary in London, where she focused on artists from Africa and its diaspora and has curated widely across institutions and independent spaces.

Speaking of joining the show for the 11th series, Langret said: “I’m honoured to join Landscape Artist of the Year, it’s a brilliant celebration of artistic practice and offers a unique lens on how we engage with our environment through creativity. I’ll be looking for bold ideas and work that pushes the boundaries of landscape art while demonstrating personal expression.”

Langret replaces Kate Bryan, who departed this series after a decade on the judges’ panel.

Bryan said of her exit: “After ten incredible and memorable years on the show, it feels like the right moment to hand over the baton. It’s been a privilege to be part of something that means so much to so many people and to witness such extraordinary talent from the wildcards to the artists to the exceptional crew that make it all possible.

“Eva is a wonderful addition, and I can’t wait to see how the series evolves with fresh eyes on the panel. I am delighted to still be continuing with Portrait Artist of the Year alongside my brilliant fellow judges, Tai and Kathleen.”
