What happens in Heated Rivalry Season 1 Finale, ‘The Cottage’?
Warning: Major spoilers ahead
At the MLH Awards, Scott Hunter is awarded Most Valuable Player of the year. Accepting his award, he reflects on the past few weeks after coming out as gay and going public with his relationship with Kip.
He says he’s glad that he did, realising the importance of what he did and what it meant to people, and how long he felt ‘other’ given the language and mocking used as part of locker room banter before he met Kip. He notes that Kip gave him the strength to come out and dedicates the award to him. Kip, alongside Elena and his friends, watch on with pride from their bar.
Ottawa, July 2017
At the airport, Shane picks up Ilya for their time away together at the cottage. As Shane drives, the pair decide to skip getting a bite to eat and head straight there, eager to have as much privacy as possible and not be recognised.
Ilya thanks him for inviting him, though admits he’s terrified, and Shane reveals that his parents believe he’s on a silent retreat, so they won’t be disturbed even though they live nearby.
At the cottage, Ilya admits he knows Shane had got his cottage made from scratch, after reading up on him in magazines. While offering a tour, the pair waste no time in initiating sex, though Shane admits he’s worried he won’t last long as it’s “been a while”. To his surprise, Ilya admits the same, saying the last time he slept with Shane was the last time he slept with anyone.
The pair vow for the next two weeks to be as honest with each other as possible, before heading to the bedroom. While Shane goes to close the curtains so they’re not seen through the floor-length windows, Ilya tells him not to, and instead they have sex against the glass.
Shane later fires up the barbecue and makes burgers, with Ilya laughing that he made eight, instead of cutting the recipe in half. As they eat, Ilya asks about his parents. He says they’re great, but he’s not out to them, though he’s not sure why. He thinks that it’s partly due to the fact he’s seeing Ilya, who they believe is his arch-rival.
That evening, they sit by the fire pit outside, when Shane gets a text from Rose. Ilya admits his jealousy.
Ilya later opens up about his brother, saying that he hasn’t spoken to Alexei and he’s not sure if it’s a good or bad thing. He also shares that he loved his mother, who died “by accident”, although it becomes clear it was a suicide. He was the one who found her. Ilya says he doesn’t want him to think of his mother as weak, and Shane assures her he doesn’t.
Game Changer
The next morning, Shane and Ilya wake up in each other's arms. Shane gets a call from Hayden, who updates him on his new baby, but Ilya distracts him by making sexual advances while he’s talking to him. After hanging up, Shane admits that while it’s hot, their relationship has expanded beyond just sex to him.
Later, as they’re kicking a ball around the garden, Ilya shares the possibility of switching from the Boston Raiders to a Canadian team. Eager to no longer have a Russian passport, he later floats the idea of marrying Svetlana to get US citizenship, which annoys Shane. Shane says as he likes women, he could find someone to marry for real for the passport, prompting Ilya to admit he has a problem: despite the beautiful women he’s surrounded by, he always wishes they were ‘this annoying hockey player with freckles’.
Shane asks if he wants the problem to go away, and Ilya says he never wants him to go away. Shane says they’ll find a way to be together but pleads with him not to marry Svetlana.
Later on that night, Shane suggests he transfer to Ottawa, who are looking for a new captain, and that they change their rivalry narrative in the media to make them friends, perhaps even starting a charity so they have a legitimate excuse to be seen and spend time together whenever they want. Once they retire, they can be together for real, by which point it wouldn’t matter.
Ilya is surprised he’s thought that far ahead, and asks Shane if that’s what he wants, getting emotional as Shane tells him all he’s wanted for a while is for them to be together. They then tell each other they love each other for the first time.
Game Changer
Over the course of the next few days, they pair enjoy being alone together without disturbance. Shane suggests opening a hockey school to raise money for mental health charities in honour of Ilya’s mother, and Ilya tells him that she would’ve loved him like he does.
They later head to spend time in the lake, but when they get back to the house their moment of bliss is upended when Shane’s father spots them kissing together. Realising he’s been caught, Shane begins to panic, and Ilya tries to calm him down. When Shane goes to speak to his dad, he’s already driven off.
Shane is terrified, calling it his nightmare, but Ilya tells him it’s time to wake up and come clean to his parents. Deciding to drive over there and speak to his parents, Ilya offers to come with him, and Shane agrees. On the drive there, Ilya comforts Shane, who is silently panicking about what’s about to happen and how to handle it.
By the time they arrive, his dad has already told his mum, and they were waiting for him. Shane apologises to his dad for finding out that way but admits that he’s gay and in a relationship with Ilya. Yuna is confused as she believed Shane “hates” Ilya. While Shane understands why she would think that, he admits he’s actually in love with him.
As the group sit down for dinner, Yuna admits that they had questioned if he was gay before but had no idea about Ilya. The pair have a lot of questions, including how long they’ve been together, what lies ahead for them, and how many people know. The group drink tea, then vodka, before Yuna takes a second to step outside and catch some air.
Shane follows her, offering a cardigan, and tells her that he tried really hard to not be gay. She tells him he has nothing to apologise for. Tearing up, she says she’s sorry that she made him feel like he couldn’t tell her what was going on, and that she’s proud of him.
Heading back into dinner, Yuna finds herself turning on business mode, saying they need a plan in case something leaks, as well as thinking of business opportunities and brand deals so they can capitalise on it if they need to. Shane tells her to pump the brakes on it all because he has no intention of coming out just yet.
She then asks Ilya about potentially transferring to Ottawa’s team, and what loyalty he has to the Boston Raiders, considering they drafted him in the first place. Ilya jokes that he can see where Shane’s passion for hockey comes from, but his loyalty is to Shane.
Yuna asks if either of them had spoken to Scott Hunter since he came out, and Ilya reveals that he had briefly, but not about his coming out. Overwhelmed by the conversation, Shane begins to have a panic attack, putting his head on the desk and taking a moment to breathe.
Ilya calms him down, saying that he’ll be OK because he has his family and boyfriend by his side now. Shane realises this is the first time he’s referred to himself as his boyfriend, and they kiss in front of his parents, which makes Yuna smile.
As Shane and Ilya head back to the cottage, the group plan some more time together, with his parents telling them they love them before they drive off together.
