What happens in Heated Rivalry, Episode 5 ‘I’ll Believe in Anything’?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

After a night together, Rose leaves Shane in bed to go back to her hotel. He apologises to her for the evening before at the club, saying the ‘stress of the season was getting to him’, and she suggests catching up for dinner just the two of them.

Shortly after, Shane looks at social media comments about his relationship with Rose, with people believing they are a “true romance”. Ilya is also reading the comments, annoyed and upset as he waits at the airport to head back to Boston.

In an upcoming East Coast vs West Coast All Star game in Tampa Bay, Ilya and Shane are set to play on the same team for the first time along with Scott Hunter.

With pressure mounting, Shane meets up with Rose for an intimate dinner together. She comments that her friend Miles is jealous of her for being with him, which makes him blush. Pushing on the topic, she talks about how many movie stars are gay, but not out, and asks if there are any in hockey. He stumbles and says no one has said it publicly.

She then admits that she’s asking because she has a feeling he might be gay, as much as he likes her. He crumbles and tells her the truth – that he likes her and likes spending time with her, but he knows the sex is the problem. She tells him that a problem is something fixable, and it doesn’t need to be fixed, they’re just not a good fit for each other.

Rose is kind about it, and Shane begins to tear up as they talk about how he feels about his sexuality and his past experiences for the first time. He apologises but she jokes that she’s had plenty of gay boyfriends before thanks to her work in theatre. She promises to keep his secret and offers to be there for him to talk about anything whenever he needs. She’s happy to remain his friend, and Shane is relieved someone finally sees him for who he is.

At his house, Ilya is lying in bed with Svetlana, smoking and talking about hockey. Conversation turns to the All-Star game, and the fact he’s set to play alongside Shane, and Ilya begins to freeze up, dismissing his ability.

Svetlana, who is a life-long hockey fan, hits back at his comments because she knows he’s just saying it, thinking they would make good teammates. She then comments about how many outfits Rose could be bringing.

Florida, 2017

As everyone arrives in Florida for the All-Star game, Shane and Ilya meet at a bar, where Ilya notices Shane has started drinking alcohol rather than his usual ginger ale. Ilya asks if he’s brought anyone with him, but he says no, though his parents considered coming. Ilya reveals he’s alone as well and suggests “it's a good time to get to know each other better”.

As the pair chat, Shane admits that he’s hired a stylist, which makes Ilya laugh. He asks if it was for Rose, but he says no, he just didn’t want to look like he’s going to the gym all the time. He also admits that while Rose is great, they’re not together, which relieves Ilya even though he tries to hide it.

Later at the pool, Shane watches on as Ilya jokes around with a group of kids in the water who are fans, deliberately losing a race. On the ice, they get on well as well, with their tension instead making way for genuine fun.

At sunset, Ilya finds Shane on the beach, where he brings up Rose again. While they try to deny their feelings for each other, they brush their hands against each other in the sand, and Shane asks what room Ilya is in, later joining him that evening.

Instead of having sex, Shane wants to talk, admitting things ‘felt different’ the last time they were together and real feelings are getting involved. He asks Ilya if he felt it too, but Ilya continues to try and joke it off.

Shane admits he’s fully gay, not bisexual like Ilya, and not only that, he’s also falling for him. Ilya tells him that they can’t be something, but hesitates when Shane asks if he would want to be. He gets mad the more Shane opens up, explaining he would never be able to return home to Russia if he came out, and his family would likely disown him as both his dad and brother are police and “old-fashioned”. However, Ilya does finally share about his dad’s dementia, breaking down in tears as Shane holds him.

Two Weeks Later

With their secret romance back on, Ilya texts Shane while he’s in Boston for the night, asking him to come over for an hour. While Shane initially says no as they have a game the next morning, he’s already out the door by the time Ilya responds.

When they’re in bed, Ilya ignores a call from his brother Alexei, and Shane tries to ask more questions, but Ilya brushes it off.

The next day, when they play a game, Boston wins – but as Ilya celebrates in the locker room afterwards, things grind to a halt when he gets a call from his brother.

The next day, Shane overhears that Ilya didn’t fly with his team to Nashville for a game, which worries him. He tries to text and call him, but doesn’t hear anything back until that evening, when Ilya shares that he’s flown to Moscow because his dad has died.

Shane encourages him to take his time before coming back, though Ilya wants to return to the States by the end of the week. Rather than focus on his sadness, Ilya encourages them to have phone sex instead.

The next day, Ilya attends his father’s funeral with Svetlana. At dinner afterwards, Alexei eyes him from across the table. Alexei later corners him and tells him to stop avoiding him, before asking him “what the plan” is now their dad’s dead, accusing Ilya of abandoning the family. Ilya reminds him that he has been bankrolling them for years – especially Alexei, who has a drug problem and is raising a family on Ilya’s money. Alexei argues he’s been looking after his father for the past five months without him.

Svetlana, overhearing the commotion, tries to break the pair up as things get heated, but Ilya lashes out at Alexei when he calls Svetlana a ‘whore’. Ilya promises to set up a trust for Alexei’s daughter, which she can have access to when she turns 18, and will leave him his apartment, but apart from that they are done, and Alexei is never to contact him again. If he does, he will ruin Alexei.

As Svetlana helps Ilya get himself together, he thanks her, saying he doesn’t deserve her and he loves her. She tells him that she knows. But she’s aware he doesn’t want her - he wants “Jane”. Nonetheless, she’s not going anywhere, and she “hopes Jane knows how lucky he is” – revealing she knows he’s in love with a man.

Ilya calls Shane as he goes for a walk, sharing what’s gone on, but struggling to explain his feelings as English isn’t his first language. Shane tells him to share everything on his mind to him in Russian, as even though he wouldn’t understand, it might be good to get it out.

Ilya agrees and tells him how much he hates being home, how he feels hated, resented and used by everyone in his family, especially Alexei, even though he arranged the entire funeral and it doesn’t feel enough. He also feels guilt over not being there for his dad in his final months.

He now feels that he only has Svetlana and Shane – admitting he’s in love with Shane and has no idea what to do about it. Shane listens, but doesn’t understand a word, so just tells him he misses him.

One Week Later

Boston and Montreal face off against each other again on the ice, with Ilya returning to the game for the first time since his dad’s death. The pair arrange to meet up that evening, which is noticed by a teammate, but Shane claims he’d just offered his condolences and Ilya had told him to go away.

As the game starts, the pair look happy – but tragedy strikes when Shane is sacked by another player, being left bloodied and unconscious on the ice.

As the medical team tend to Shane, Ilya stands frozen, unsure of what to do. As he’s taken off by paramedics, Ilya demands to know if Shane is alright but is held back. Concussed and floating in-and-out of consciousness, Shane tries to get the medics to tell Ilya that he’s OK, but they don’t understand him.

Ilya later sneaks into Shane’s hospital room to see him, but he’s dosed up on painkillers, having suffered a concussion and a dislocated shoulder. Ilya admits seeing Shane hurt scared him, and Shane asks him to not go to Russia this summer, but to spend time with him at his cottage, away from the world. Ilya is hesitant but tells him he’d think about it before they’re interrupted by a nurse.

May 2017

Moving back in with his parents while he recovers, Shane calls Rose to give her an update on his wellbeing, and he invites her down to the cottage on Labour Day to spend time with his parents, who still don’t know he’s gay. She tells him they can still carry on the lie, but he says no. He’s tired of lying.

Shane watches Ilya’s latest playoff game with his mum and dad, who comment they hate him less after seeing that he visited Shane in the hospital. The Raiders lose, getting knocked out of the cup, which means the New York Admirals – Scott Hunter’s team – are through to the finals. He later texts Ilya about his mom’s change of heart, and they mock the chance of Scott taking home the cup after so many years of defeat.

A week later though, the New York Admirals emerge victorious for the first time in 28 years, lifting the Stanley Cup. In the arena, Scott raises the trophy, while his ex, Kip, watches from the stands alongside his friend Elena. As Scott parades around the ice with the trophy, he spots them and freezes on the spot.

Making the decision to finally be brave and open, Scott encourages Kip to join him on the ice. Realising what’s happening, Kip does and they kiss, declaring their love for each other as Scott finally outs himself to the world. Everyone, including Shane and his parents, are shocked at the move.

Ilya, who is packing up his things with Svetlana, also sees the kiss, and decides to make a decision of his own. Calling Shane, he tells him he’s coming to the cottage for the summer.
