Season 2 Episodes Recap

The game has begun – and the key players are beginning to make their moves. With King Joffrey’s position on the Iron Throne officially being disputed, it will take armies to decide who has a rightful place at King’s Landing. Let the bloodshed commence.

Episode 1: The North Remembers

Now King, Joffrey puts a new court in place – with Tyrion being offered a uniquely powerful position by his nephew. Elsewhere, Stannis Baratheon now knows Joffrey is not his brother’s son, so wants to dethrone the boy and claim the Iron Throne for himself. To do this, he seeks allegiance with a powerful source. Aware he could be under threat, Joffrey resorts to dramatic and bloody measures to make sure there is no legitimate heir to take his place.

As for the Starks, Arya has escaped King’s Landing under the assumed new persona of Arry, a young boy and potential member of the Night’s Watch, and finds a friend in Gendry – a former armourer’s apprentice with a hidden connection to House Baratheon. Back in Winterfell, new leader Robb Stark attempts to negotiate a peace treaty with the Lannisters – while simultaneously sending people out to acquire allegiances from the other noble houses in case they need to be prepared for war. Among their attempted alliances is Renly Baratheon, who also stakes his claim to the throne.

Episode 2: The Night Lands

Theon Greyjoy returns to his native home of Pyke in the Iron Islands, and is reunited with his sister, Yara, and father, Balon – who have mixed feelings about who Theon’s become as a ward of the Starks.

The court reshuffle continues at King’s Landing, with Robb Stark’s peace terms rejected by Cersei and allies being brought in to help the Lannisters know who to trust.

As that happens, Stannis is building his army, recruiting a fleet of ships thanks to sworn allegiant, Ser Davos Seaworth. Stannis also plans to sire an heir with wife, Melisandre, to further support the bloodline.

Back in the North, Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly find themselves in a dispute at Craster’s Keep when they meet Gilly. A pregnant wildling who fears for her tot’s life if born a boy – as a son’s fate could be considered worse than death.

Elsewhere Daenerys’s camp receives a warning from an unknown enemy when one of their horses returns with the head of its rider in a bag.

Episode 3: What Is Dead May Never Die

Catelyn Stark visits Renly Baratheon in order to form an allegiance, and discovers he’s now married to Margaery Tyrell – a member of another noble house. However, not everything is as it seems when it comes to their union, with her brother Loras more involved than many would have people believe.

Over at the Iron Islands, Theon reaffirms his allegiance to his family as his father Balon begins to plan an attack on the North to reclaim his position of power there.

At King’s Landing, Tyrion plants his own spies among the court while uncovering those who work for others within his family.

While the official Night’s Watchmen, including Jon Snow and Samwell, outstay their welcome at Craster’s Keep Beyond the Wall, the new recruits on their way to join them find themselves under attack as Joffrey’s mission to rid Westeros of potential claimants to the throne continues.

Episode 4: Garden Of Bones

Things go from bad to worse for King Joffrey as the Lannisters suffer another defeat at the hands of the Stark army – leaving his betrothed Sansa Stark bearing the brunt of his retribution for the embarrassment. Becoming more power-hungry by the day, not even Tyrion can stop Joffrey abusing his power.

Stannis and Renly Baratheon are refusing to see eye-to-eye when it comes to who deserves to be King more, despite Catelyn’s efforts to unite them against the Lannisters. Melisandre gives birth – but with a twist of what was expected.

Tyrion is continuing to plant spies and informants around King’s Landing, and gets a massive win when he discovers Cersei’s incestuous instincts extend beyond her brother, Jamie.

Arya and Gendry are taken to Harrenhal and, as long as their identities are secret, become slaves to Tywin Lannister.

Daenerys and her group finally arrive at the city of Qarth to a hostile welcome, and are nearly refused entry before on their insistence to see Daenerys’ dragons. Thankfully a kind stranger offers to vouch for them.

Episode 5: The Ghost of Harrenhal

Arya’s kindness results in her getting a karmic reward in the form of an unexpected ally.

Renly Baratheon’s quest for the throne comes to an end – but it has repercussions for one of his Kingsguard, and a new allegiance is formed as a result.

Keen to prove himself to his father, Theon leaves Pyke with a reckless plan for Winterfell.

Bran Stark, who has been dreaming of a mysterious Three-Eyed Raven, retells a dream of the sea coming to The North.

Beyond The Wall, the Night’s Watch arrive at the Fist Of The First Men, a fortress in the haunted forest.

Finally Daenerys, while in Qarth, finds herself with a new proposal to consider.

Episode 6: The Old Gods and The New

Theon and his soldiers descend upon Winterfell, and he demands Bran yields the kingdom to him. But loyalty to the Starks is not that easily broken – and some are willing to lay their lives down for it. Especially as they consider Theon a traitor after years within the Stark fold.

With no choice but to run, Bran and brother Rickon escape with the help of Osha and Hodor.

After Robb celebrates another win and meets nurse Talisa, his joy is short-lived as he hears news of Theon’s betrayal, vowing to reclaim his home of Winterfell.

Beyond The Wall, the Night’s Watch have a run in with wildlings, with one – Ygritte – proving particular trouble for Jon.

At Harrenhal, Tywin and Littlefinger begin to lay plans to get the allegiance of the Tyrell family – with Arya keeping a close ear on their plans as a servant. As her identity threatens to reveal itself, she recruits H’ghar to kill a suspicious officer.

Over at King’s Landing, Tyrion upsets sister Cersei by sending her daughter Myrcella away for protection. It turns out to be a wise move, as Joffrey’s presence incites a bloody riot.

Finally, at Qarth, Daenerys’s efforts to get what is needed for her next step fight for the throne hits a snag as forces begin to work against her.

Episode 7: A Man Without Honour

Unhappy about the escaped Starks, Theon sets about finding them. With his credibility waning among his men, he resorts to new measures to get their attention.

As Robb prepares his men to return to Winterfell, a fresh upset involving Jaime Lannister proves to cause unrest and a search for retribution. Catelyn takes it upon herself to make a bold move against the wishes of her son.

At Harrenhal, Tywin believes the recent death was an attempt on his life, but he finds himself bonding more with Arya.

Jon finds himself in more trouble than he bargained for with Ygritte, who begins to stir feelings for him he’s never experienced before.

At King’s Landing, Sansa is horrified to discover she has started menstruating, meaning she is now of age to bear King Joffrey’s children. When Cersei discovers the news, she gives Sansa some surprisingly sage advice – before making a heartbreaking confession to Tyrion.

Finally in Qarth, Daenerys finds herself getting desperate to reunite with her dragons, with a surprise power play proving horrifying and helpful in equal measure.

Episode 8: The Prince of Winterfell

Theon’s reunion with Yara doesn’t go the way he hoped, with her unimpressed, even disgusted, at the way he’s seized Winterfell. Demanding his return to Pyke, Theon refuses to stand down from his new powerful position.

Jon Snow finds himself captured by the wildlings, and is horrified to learn members of the Night’s Watch have been killed trying to find him. At the Fist of First Men, Sam and the Night’s Watch brothers make a huge discovery.

At base camp, Robb is left furious at his mother for secretly freeing Jaime Lannister in a bid to trade him for Sansa and Arya, and puts her under watch. As this plays out, he finds himself falling further for Talisa. Brienne and Jaime get off to a rocky start on their trek to King’s Landing.

Tywin initiates plans to attack Robb Stark’s men, prompting Arya to come up with an escape plan from Harrenhal with Gendry and Hot Pie.

At King’s Landing, Cersei attempts to get an advantage over her brother Tyrion, while Joffrey gets restless over his lack of knowledge about their rival’s position in war.

In Qarth, Jorah and Daenerys head to reclaim her dragons.

Episode 9: Blackwater

As Stannis Baratheon’s fleet of ships descends on King’s Landing, King Joffrey’s true nature reveals itself to Sansa.

With the Lannisters under attack, one warrior renounces Joffrey after finding himself protective over Sansa Stark, offering her aid in getting back to Winterfell.

With Joffrey doing little in battle, Tyrion leads the men defending King’s Landing, while Cersei considers extreme measures to keep youngest son, Tommen, from being captured.

Just when all hope is lost, an ally finally makes a belated appearance.

Episode 10: Valar Morghulis

The Lannisters set aside the long-held plans for Sansa to marry Joffrey, with Margaery Tyrell being lined-up as the King’s new bride for the sake of allegiance. Tywin’s new position at King’s Landing leaves Tyrion fearing for his safety.

Another engagement is broken when Robb becomes dedicated to marrying Talisa instead of Walder Frey’s daughter.

In Quath, Daenerys is tested in a heartbreaking way in order to reunite with her dragons, and deliver justice to traitors before she and Jorah continue their quest to reclaim the throne.

Theon’s luck officially runs out at Winterfell as he prepares for Robb’s army to arrive. H’ghar gives Arya something to remember him by, and so they can find him again in Braavos.
