Common broadband connection issues

Diagnosing your connection issue

We know how frustrating it can be when you can’t get online. The good news is that most connection problems have quick, simple fixes. Let’s look at some of the most common issues and how to sort them.

First, work out whether the problem is with your device or your network. Try connecting with another phone, tablet or laptop. If that one gets online, then your original device is the culprit. A restart, a software update or a quick look at your settings usually gets everything back on track.

If none of your devices can connect, the issue is more likely with your internet connection or router. Reboot the router and make sure all the cables are firmly in place. If you’re still not seeing any improvement, the problem is probably coming from the WiFi network itself.

Network issues

If you can’t connect to your network at all, especially if everything was working earlier, there may be an outage in your area. Checking your broadband provider’s status page can help confirm this.

Common issues and how to fix them

There are lots of reasons why your broadband might not be working as it should. The good news is that most issues are quick and easy to fix. Here are some of the most common problems and how to solve them.

Slow speeds
Too many people using the internet at the same time can slow things down. This often happens when someone is streaming or gaming while someone else is on a work video call.
Slow speeds can also happen if the WiFi signal between your router and your device is too weak.

To resolve it, try:
• Unplugging your router for at least 30 seconds
• Closing any apps you may be running but not using
• Disconnect any non-essential devices

No internet connection
This will stop you from doing anything online and can happen if your cables are not connected properly, you have a faulty router, or there’s an internet outage.

• Unplug and reboot your router and see if it reconnects to the internet
• Test the connection with a different device
• Check for an internet outage using your broadband provider’s service checker

Weak WiFi signal
Your network may struggle if there are lots of devices connected. The signal can also be affected by router placement or nearby electronics.

To improve the signal, try:
• Move your device closer to your router
• Reposition your router to a more open spot away from obstructions
• Disconnect devices that are not essential

Too many devices
Broadband speeds can drop when lots of devices are connected and sharing the same bandwidth. Streaming, downloading, and updates happening at the same time can overload the router.

You can help by:
• Disconnect anything that isn’t essential
• Turn off the internet on devices you're not using – including smart TVs and speakers
• Use your router’s app to see which devices are consuming the most data

Network Interference
WiFi uses radio waves to send data between your router and devices. Signals from other household electronics, like microwaves, baby monitors, and Bluetooth devices, can interfere and cause slower speeds or dropouts.

To reduce interference:
• Keep the router away from anything likely to interfere with its function
• Place it in an open, high-up location
• Switch from the crowded 2.4GHz band to the 5GHz band for a faster connection with less interference

Is it time for an upgrade?

If your internet still isn’t working as it should, or speeds remain slow after trying these fixes, it may be time to review your broadband plan.
