House of the Dragon: Season 3 Guide

House of the Dragon season 3 wastes no time throwing viewers straight back into the action as the war between the Black and Green factions of House Targaryen spans land, sea and sky.

The brutal civil war that becomes known in Westerosi history as the Dance of Dragons is now full throttle – but with Aegon badly disfigured and on the run, and Rhaenyra vying for her position on the throne, it’s those around them that keep the fight going.

For the Greens, while Aemond assumes the role of King Regent in his brother’s absence, a new central player enters the game in the shape of the cunning and strategic Ormund Hightower, who has taken Alicent’s youngest son, Daeron, under his wing and has big plans for his future.

Meanwhile over in Dragonstone, frustrations grow – particularly from Rhaenyra’s uncle-husband Daemon and her son, Prince Jacearys, who are torn about her decision to bring two new dragon riders, Ulf and Hugh, who are not of noble birth, into the mix.

Then there’s Lord Corlys, who is grappling with a reunion with his two illegitimate sons, Addam and Alyn, while continuing to grieve his great love, Rhaenys.

House of the Dragon season 3 kicks off with one of the most well-known battles within the Dance of the Dragons – the Battle of the Gullet.

Alicent needs to think on her feet as her plans quickly fall apart, and encourages Aemond to seize Harrenhal to get him away from the Capital. Rhaena finally bonds with a dragon – but her eagerness to prove her worth as a rider comes at a cost. On land, Daemon meets up with key new allies in the fight for Rhaenyra’s claim, while at sea, the Battle of the Gullet commences, with Triarchy leader Sharako Lohar going up against Lord Corlys’s fleet. Many lives are lost in the process, and others left hanging in the balance.

In the aftermath of battle, Queen Rhaenyra is left devastated after a massive loss. Alicent makes plans to flee King’s Landing with Helaena, while Aemond arrives to claim Harrenhal.
As Rhaenyra renews her verve in her fight for the crown, an old face makes a shocking reappearance.

Rhaenyra’s celebration is short-lived when she realises there is more to being Queen than sitting on the Iron Throne.
As demands from her people quickly pile in, the weight of her decisions become clear, and with some still refusing to bend the knee, her long-held allies start questioning her capabilities and loyalties.
Daemon heads to meet Ormund Hightower on the battlefield and secure his surrender, but a bold move takes them all by surprise.

As the Hightower faction seize the small market town of Tumbleton, Ormund makes himself at home as he initiates new strategies to get under Rhaenyra’s skin – sharing big plans for young Daeron’s future.
After seeing the body of Sunfyre, his beloved dragon, outside of Rook’s Rest, a heartbroken Aegon faces further humiliation when he and Larys are forced to blend in with the refugees of the area to remain undetected.
Rhaenyra’s problems go from bad to worse as she struggles to win the favour of her smallfolk, as rumours about her spread around the city.
Meanwhile, Daemon has to make a difficult choice when he discovers the identity of the mysterious dragonrider.

In Harrenhal, Alys Rivers continues her efforts to bond with Aemond, as the search for the King Regent attracts the attention of bounty hunters.
Things continue to fall apart in King’s Landing, as mystery assassins start targeting members of the City Watch. When Daemon goes on a mission to discover who’s behind it, he realises there’s someone outside of the city pulling the strings.
Aegon is forced to reckon with his past behaviour when his moping becomes too much to bear for Larys – but the pair get a surprising boost by the return of an ally, while Ser Criston lays out his future, leaving Ser Gwayne to make a decision.

Ormund Hightower’s efforts to get under the skin of the Rhaenyra continue – but the arrival of his cousin Ser Gwayne proves to be the real lifeline.
Daemon becomes more determined than ever to weed out those working against Rhaenyra in King’s Landing, but his anger gets the better of him during a run-in with Ulf.
As the smallfolk continue to struggle in the growing crisis, more turn their back on Rhaenyra, while Alicent’s desperate attempt to get to safety with Helaena falls flat.
