Sound problems on Sky Q

Surround sound not working

If your surround sound isn't working, here are a few things to check to get it working again.

  • Check your settings

    Select Dolby Digital setting

    You can connect your Sky Q box to a surround sound TV or compatible speaker system using an HDMI or optical cable. 

    To make sure you're set up correctly:

    1. Press Home on your Sky Q remote, select Settings, then Setup, followed by Audio visual.
    2. If you're using an HDMI cable, select Digital audio output HDMI and set it to Dolby Digital
    3. If you’re using an HDMI cable, have a Sky Q 2TB box, the Sky Q Multiscreen subscription and your audio device can support Dolby Atmos, select Digital audio output HDMI and set it to Dolby Digital Plus

    4. If you're using an optical cable, select Digital audio output optical and set it to Dolby Digital.

    Check your Audio Description setting

    Audio Description must be switched off on your Sky Q box. To check, press ? on your Sky Q remote while watching TV to make sure it's off.

  • Check your cable

    Your Sky Q box must be connected securely to a speaker system or TV with an HDMI cable or optical cable before you can hear surround sound.

    1. Switch your Sky Q box off at the mains, including any devices that are connected to it.
    2. Check that both ends of all cables are securely connected.
    3. Switch your Sky Q box and all connected devices back on at the mains.
    4. Wait for the on screen instructions to disappear then press Home on your Sky Q remote.
  • Check to see if normal sound is working
    1. Press Home on your Sky Q remote and select Settings, followed by Setup
    2. Select Audio visual, then Digital audio output HDMI and set it to Normal.

    If the sound is now working normally, there may be a problem with your surround sound equipment. Contact the manufacturer.
