Sky Mobile bill not what you expected

Account changes or usage charges can make your bill higher or lower than you expected. This is often because of pro-rata billing.

What does pro-rata mean?

Pro-rata means a proportion or part of an overall amount.

What's my Sky Mobile bill made up of?

Each monthly bill includes charges for:

  • Your plan and any Savers (1 month in advance)
  • Phone payments (monthly - if applicable)
  • Any usage charges outside of your plan and any Add On charges (for the previous month after you've used them)

To find out why your bill is different this month choose a relevant option below.

  • Your first bill

If you activate your SIM on the 29th/30th/31st of the month, your first bill will be generated on that date. But your future bill date will change to an earlier date of the 26th/27th/28th of the month respectively, as not all months have more than 28 days.

Your first bill may be different to what you expected as it covers a shorter billing period (slightly less than a full month).

    Charges

As your first bill will cover slightly less than a month, for example from the 29th – 25th (instead of the 29th – 28th), you’ll be charged for a proportion/part of a standard month (a pro-rata amount) for your plan and any Savers, to cover the number of days in the shorter billing period.

Your future bills will be for the expected monthly amount.

    Allowances

You’ll get a proportion/part of your monthly data allowance based on the number of days in the shorter billing period.

    Example:

    First bill:

    • Activate SIM: 29th January
    • First bill date: 29th for your first bill only
    • First payment due date: 1st February (or up to 10 days later if you’re paying by Direct Debit)
    • First billing period: 29th January – 25th February (slightly less than a month)
    Future bills:

    • Future ongoing bill issue date: 26th
    • Future ongoing payment due date: 1st (regardless of payment method)
    • Future billing period: 26th – 25th

    First bill amount:

    • Charges for a proportion/part of a standard month in advance, for your plan and any Savers, for the 29th January – 25th February (slightly less than a month)
    • Monthly phone payments (if applicable)

    Second bill amount:

    • A month in advance for your plan and any Savers for the 26th February – 25th March
    • Usage charges and Add Ons from the previous month 29th January – 25th February (slightly less than a month)
    • Monthly phone payments (if applicable)

  • Activating an additional SIM(s)

If you activate an additional SIM part way through your monthly billing period, your billing and payment due dates won’t change.

For the additional SIM, you’ll only be charged for a proportion/part of a standard month (a pro-rata amount) for your plan and any Savers,  for the days you've used the services in the first month. Plus you'll be charged for any out of plan usage from those days.

You'll also be charged a month in advance for the additional SIM(s) so that future bills will fall in-line with your regular billing period.

    Charges

Your bill may be higher than expected as this includes:

    • A full month in advance for your plan and any Savers for any new and existing SIM(s)
    • Usage charges and Add Ons for the previous month for any new and existing SIM(s)
    • Monthly phone payments for any new and existing phone(s), if applicable
    • Plus charges for a proportion/part of a standard month for your plan and any Savers for the new additional SIM. This is based on the number of days you had the service during that billing period.

    Allowances

For the additional SIM, you’ll get a proportion/part of your monthly data allowance based on the number of days from when the SIM was activated until your next bill.

    Example:

    Billing period: 14th – 13th (a full month)

    Activate second SIM: 3rd March

    Proportion/part charges cover: 3rd – 13th March

    Bill amount:

    • A full month in advance for your plan and any Savers for both SIMs from the 14th March – 13th April
    • Usage charges and Add Ons from the previous month for 14th February – 13th March
    • Monthly phone payments for both phones (if applicable)
    • Plus charges for the additional SIM for a proportion/part of a standard month for your plan, any Savers and any out of plan usage from the 3rd - 13th March

  • Changing your payment due date

If you change your payment due date, your next bill may be higher as it covers a longer billing period.

    Charges

    Your next bill will include:

    • A full month in advance for your plan and any Savers
    • Usage charges and Add Ons from the previous month
    • Up to two monthly phone payments for each phone (if applicable and depending on your credit agreement repayment date)
    • Plus charges for a proportion/part of a standard month for your plan, any Savers and any out of plan usage to cover the additional number of days between your old payment due date and your new payment due date.

If you have a credit agreement, your monthly phone payment date will always appear on your bill on the same date. However changing your payment date may result in two credit agreement repayments on the same bill. This happens if the longer billing period crosses over two separate months.

The total you’ll have to pay for the phone won’t change and you’ll still be eligible to Swap your phone on the same date.

    Allowances

You’ll get a proportion/part of your monthly data allowance based on the number of days between your old payment due date and your new payment due date.

Your allowance will then refresh after your original bill date has passed and your allowance refresh date will fall in line with your new bill issue date where you’ll get your usual monthly allowance.

  • Changing your plan (Mix)

    Upgrading your plan

If you upgrade your data plan part way through your monthly billing period it will take effect immediately.

Your next bill may be higher than normal as, regardless of when in the month you ask to upgrade, we’ll charge you for two months of your new plan as we’ll give you two full months’ worth of data.

Your bill will include charges for your data plan for the previous month and for a month in advance.  It will also include a credit for your lower plan.

Any data you don’t use that month will roll into your Sky Piggybank for you to use later.

    Charges

    • A credit for the previous month’s lower plan (that you paid in advance)
    • The cost of the new higher plan for the previous month
    • The cost of the new higher plan for the following month and charges for any Savers
    • Monthly phone payments (if applicable)
    • Usage charges and Add Ons from the previous month

    Allowances

Once you’ve made the change, your higher data plan allowance will take effect immediately and at the end of your monthly billing period any remaining data will be added to your Sky Piggybank.

    Downgrading your plan

If you choose to lower your plan part way through your monthly billing period it won’t take effect until your next billing period.

  • Adding a Saver or an Add On

    Adding a Saver

If you add a Saver part way through your monthly billing period, you’ll be charged for a proportion of a standard month (a pro-rated amount). This is based on the number of days you had the service during that billing period.

Future bills will then fall in line with your regular billing period and cover a full month.

    Charges

    • A month in advance for your plan and any Savers
    • Monthly phone payments (if applicable)
    • Usage charges and Add Ons for the previous month
    • Plus charges for a proportion/part of a standard month (pro-rata charges) for your new Saver, to cover the number of days you had the service during that billing period

    Buying an Add On

You can buy an Add On at any time and you’ll get your new data allowance straight away. This will be charged on your next bill. At the end of your monthly billing period any remaining data will be added to your Sky Piggybank.

  • Usage and account charges

Your bill may be higher or lower than expected due to:

Usage charges outside of your plan

These can include calls, texts and international roaming and should be added to your next month’s bill.

Example of usage charges outside of you plan include, calls to premium rate 0845 numbers and Pay As You Use calls and texts. But there may be times when charges from an earlier period may appear on a later bill, particularly if you use your Sky Mobile services abroad.

    Accessories

Any payments for mobile accessories will be itemised and show on your next bill as a payment you’ve already made.

    Additional charges and adjustments

These can include any upfront phone payments, charges for receiving paper bills (if requested) and administration fees for things like paying your bill by continuous credit/debit card.

    Bill delays

There can be a delay of up to 30 hours for additional usage charges to appear in your ‘Next bill’ online.

    Roaming charges

When you use roaming abroad you’ll be using a different service provider. If there’s a delay in us receiving usage information from the other service provider there’ll be a delay adding this to your next bill.

  • Not activating your SIM

Please note: If you bought a phone and haven't activated your SIM 10 days after it was delivered, the bill for your first monthly phone payment will be automatically generated and payment will be due 3 days later (13 days after your phone was delivered).

If you don’t activate your SIM within 31 days it will expire and we may ask you to immediately repay the full amount of your credit agreement.
