Sound problems on Sky Q

No sound on recordings

If you're experiencing sound problems when viewing recordings, there are a few things you can try to fix the problem.

Check the volume

Press the Volume up button on your Sky Q remote, then press the Volume up button on your TV's remote or on the TV itself. If this works, there's a problem with your Sky Q remote. Go to Problems with your Sky Q remote.

Try to watch another recording

If the loss of sound is only affecting one recording, it's likely that the problem was with the original broadcast. The sound issue may clear if the broadcast issue was resolved. 

Try watching at least two more recordings on your Sky Q box. If possible, choose recordings from a different day and channel. If the show is available on demand, try downloading it again.

If the problem is occurring on all recordings, try the steps below.

  • Check the digital audio output

    This can occur if you've set your HDMI sound output set to Dolby Digital but your TV isn't compatible. To check:

    1. Press Home on your Sky Q remote and select Settings, then Setup.
    2. Select Audio visual, then select Digital audio output HDMI and make sure it's set to Normal.

  • Try another HDMI socket on your TV

    If your TV has more than one HDMI socket:

    1. Plug your Sky Q box's HDMI cable into a different HDMI socket on your TV.
    2. Use the Input button on your Sky Q remote to select the new TV input.
  • Try a direct connection between your Sky Q box and TV

    If your Sky Q box is connected to a speaker system or device other than your TV, try connecting your HDMI cable directly between your box and your TV.

    If your sound is back to normal, there may be a problem with the device you've just disconnected. Contact the manufacturer for advice.

  • Restart your Sky Q box

    1. Switch your Sky Q box off at the mains.
    2. Check that both ends of all cables are securely connected.
    3. Switch your Sky Q box back on at the mains.
    4. Wait for the onscreen instructions to disappear then press Home on your Sky Q remote.
