Picture problems on Sky Q

Black bars on some shows

This isn't a fault, though it can look like one.

  • Sometimes HD channels broadcast Standard Definition (SD) shows - usually because they're not available in HD. When they do, the image has to be scaled up to fit the HD format: those black bars on the side make sure that the image doesn't get stretched horizontally.
  • This can also happen with other shows - again it's part of the broadcast and is intended to preserve the correct image size.
  • Most modern televisions allow you to change the picture settings (aspect ratio). In some cases the TV may be unable to zoom or manipulate these broadcasts. Refer to the help or support website for your TV for more information.
