  • James Whale

A somewhat belated sequal to All Quiet on the Western Front, Universal's critically and commercially acclaimed anti-war drama, The Road Back didn't enjoy the same success. This wasn't director James Whale's fault as the final print was severely cut and some scenes were re-shot. This was largely thanks to the Nazi government in Germany at the time who put covert and overt pressure on the studio and the actors involved, hoping to have the film banned. The strong statement Whale wanted to make was seen by some reviewers, but this original cut was withdrawn. The film eventually released turned the story of disillusioned German soldiers returning home from the Great War into a sad little story in which the Germans could find nothing objectionable. It's a shame the film hasn't been restored to its former glory as it would be as much a classic as its illustrious predecessor.
