Real-life war pilot James Stewart is ideally cast as a professional baseball player who, after serving in WWII, is recalled to action by the US Air Force. There's no doubt about his patriotism, but with the dangers involved, who comes first - Uncle Sam or his new wife (June Allyson)? Flag-waving heroics, inspired by the story of real-life baseball slugger Ted Williams.
Despite the dullish human drama provided by stars James Stewart and June Allyson, it deservedly plays second fiddle to an engrossing study of men in their magnificent flying machines, in this case the B-36 bomber and its post-war development. The reliable supporting cast includes Henry Morgan, Bruce Bennett, Frank Lovejoy and Barry Sullivan.
