French director Louis Malle's first American venture is the controversial, truth-based story of a 12-year-old (Brooke Shields) whose prostitute mother (Susan Sarandon) auctions her off to a renowned photographer (Keith Carradine) in 1917 New Orleans. Beautifully shot and expertly handled, it's not half as dodgy as it sounds.
