Romantic thriller starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina as a couple on the run from gangsters in the south of France. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard.
This film by Jean-Luc Godard can be taken (or indeed left) on a number of levels. As a simple on-the-road crime thriller, it works well enough although parts of it don't make a lot of sense. Jean-Paul Belmondo, tired of the comfortable life with his wealthy wife in a fashionable quarter of Paris, takes off on the open road with Marianne, a woman he knew years before. Before he knows it, he's up to his neck in trouble. On another level, the film has been seen as an allegorical view of the war in Vietnam (escalating when this film was made). Beautifully photographed, the film is something of a curiosity. It may be a little hard to fathom from time to time, but it never ceases to fascinate.
