Macy's salesgirl Natalie Wood - a staunch Catholic - finds herself pregnant after a brief fling with laid-back jazz musician Steve McQueen. For once Wood is perfectly cast as the half-Italian damsel in distress while McQueen heavily hinted why he was in the process of becoming an international star. It's just a shame this bittersweet romance was their only film together.
Romantic comedy, tinged with drama, set against the background of non-stop New York.
Sometimes it seems as though Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen could do with rather more meaningful dialogue to get their teeth into, to help establish their growing relationship with each other.
Nonetheless McQueen in particular still manages to give a performance that makes it easy to see why he was in the process of becoming a world box-office draw.
