Warren Beatty directs and stars in this impressive, Oscar-winning remake of the 1943 original. He plays a Los Angeles Rams quarterback, who is accidentally taken away from his body by an over-anxious angel before he was supposed to die. However, he comes back to life in the body of a recently-murdered millionaire. Julie Christie plays the girl he falls for but can't keep while Dyan Cannon almost steals the show as the tycoon's faithless wife.
It is to the great credit of Warren Beatty (showing a delicate touch as a star, producer, co-writer and co-director) that this remake of a classic fantasy film from the Forties is every bit as memorable as the original.
Beatty (as the athlete 'taken' too soon by Heaven), Julie Christie (as the girl he falls for but can't keep), James Mason - his best in ages - Jack Warden and Charles Grodin are all first-rate.
But the film is almost stolen by (Oscar-nominated) Dyan Cannon as a tycoon's faithless wife. Smooth pace, funny bits, touching ending:
Beatty gets everything right on this one.
