This much-praised film tribute to 'The Few' received no greater acclaim than from Battle of Britain hero Group Captain Douglas Bader, subject of the classic Reach for the Sky. 'I went to see it with my tongue in my cheek,' Bader commented. 'I came out amazed. I could not fault it.' Moving and authentic, if not in the same class as The Way to the Stars, the film is set on a Royal Air Force base in the summer of 1940. With their roles here, Jack Hawkins and John Gregson took giant strides towards stardom. Today, though, the film's upper-crust accents (and attitudes) hurt it badly, and it has too little action.
