Standout performance: Ali (2001)
You may recognise him, him being the biggest film star on the planet and all...
Will Smith set out to be a mega star and crikey, how he succeeded. He had already been a millionaire and bankrupt before he started out in movies, but after the success of his TV hit the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, he has never looked back.
Professional, genial, and very careful with image. Smith is a true star whose charisma can lift indifferent material such as Hancock and Hitch.
However, you always feel Smith has more to offer, with only his performance in Ali providing a real stretch for him, and even then, the film smoothed over some of the iconic boxer’s greatest foibles.
Smith's easy charm shines though his best work, films like Men In Black and I, Robot have helped take his total box office to about $6.3bn. That's...quite good.
So far his only mis-step has been Wild Wild West, a commercial and critical flop that was compounded by the fact he turned down The Matrix to do it. Don't expect him to make a mistake like that again.
He has even (half) joked about running for President. Don’t bet against him.
