John Darwin disappeared in March 2002 after apparently paddling out to sea in a canoe.
After five and a half years he strolled into a police station to declare: "I think I'm a missing person."
He was reportedly looking suntanned.
But he is not the first man at the centre of a mystery missing persons case.
