This year's Big Brother contestants had an early start for their first day in the house - as programme bosses plan to make life as difficult for them as possible.

Some of the new house members stayed up until dawn talking about the meaning of love, but were in for a shock at 9.32am with an alarm call.

The theme of the fifth series is Big Brother Gets Evil and there are some more nasty surprises in store.

The first evil twist is that one of the housemates will have to go without their belongings for the entire series.

All the contestants entered the house with just a small overnight bag containing the bare essentials.

Their suitcases, containing all of their clothes, underwear, toiletries and luxury items, were to be delivered later.

All twelve are being called into the Diary Room one by one to be told only 11 suitcases are allowed into the house.

They are being asked to nominate the person they feel does not deserve to get their belongings.

The housemates are competing for increased prize money of £100,000 - but do not yet know that Big Brother has the power to knock money off the prize fund if they fail their tasks.

A former asylum seeker, a wannabe Page 3 girl and an animal rights activist were among the line-up unveiled in a live launch show.

Big Brother bosses have deliberately chosen 12 housemates they reckon will clash from day one.

The full names of the contestants are Marco Sabba, Ahmed Aghil, Jason Cowan, Daniel Bryan, Stuart Wilson, Victor Ebuwa, Vanessa Nimmo, Emma Greenwood, Kitten Pinder, Michelle Bass, Shell Jubin, Nadia Almada.

Vanessa and Stuart have already been installed as the joint 5-1 favourites to win by bookmakers Coral.
