Britney Spears says her parents are so controlling they make her feel like she's "trapped in a prison".
The 22-year-old singer admitted making mistakes, being young and impressionable.
"But a lot of the things I've done that seem absurd were out of wanting to break free," she told Seventeen magazine.
"Your parents have to let go of you and let you mess up because it allows you to learn who you are. You can't live in a prison."
The singer is said to have enraged her parents in January when she married Jason Alexander in Las Vegas.
The marriage was annulled just two days later.
She added: "Sometimes it's cool to make mistakes. You learn a lot about yourself."
Spears has recently turned for help to the Kabbala system of Jewish mysticism, reports the Daily Mirror.
"It's helped identify why I'm on this road," added the star.
