'CCTV Does Not Work'

CCTV does little to deter crime, new research suggests.

A new report claims the Home Office's own findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of closed-circuit television cameras.

It comes as a new state-of-the-art CCTV centre opens in Manchester.

The Government currently spends three-quarters of its crime prevention budget on the big-brother style of policing.

Home Office Minister Lord Falconer insists it is money well spent.

"In terms of providing people with both security and a sense of security, this is a good investment," he said.

"What the report is saying is let's get more research done to see how more effectively it can be used."

Properly used

Lord Falconer claims CCTV has a "significant" impact on crime levels where cameras are properly used and maintained.

The research, conducted by the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders, was commissioned by the Home Office.

Of the 24 cases studied, only six showed a reduction in crime, while in two cases crime actually went up.
