A search has been launched for a City worker whose mobile phone was found among the wreckage of the London bus destroyed by terrorists.

Jamie Gordon's friends and colleagues have plastered makeshift posters around the scene of the explosion at Tavistock Square and the other three blast sites.

They say the 30-year-old administration assistant, who works at City Asset Management, based in Old Street, had phoned the office to say he was travelling to work by bus five minutes before the explosion. He has not been heard of since.

His girlfriend Yvonne Nash, 30, who lives with Mr Gordon in Enfield, has logged his details with police and had been frantically telephoning hospitals all night.

She said he would not normally have taken that route to work, but had stayed at a friend's house following a night out.

"The worst case scenario is that he is dead," she said.

"We just have to find him. If he is hurt and on his own in hospital, we need to be with him. Not knowing is dreadful."

Home Secretary Charles Clarke said: "People are trying to help desperately and I am very sorry indeed for the situation Yvonne Nash is experiencing."

Friend and co-worker Sandy Reeve said Mr Gordon's phone was recovered among the debris found close to where the bus exploded.

The missing posters feature a photograph of Mr Gordon in a pink shirt taken the night before the attacks. He would have been wearing the same clothes on Thursday.

A helpline has been set up for anyone with information about Mr Gordon. The number is 0207 984 2000.
