Hijack Drama At US Airport
A Cuban DC-3 airliner carrying 35 people has landed in Key West, Florida after a possible hijack.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said US military aircraft were scrambled from a south Florida air base to escort the Cuban plane.
It was spotted approaching from Cuba just before 8pm (1am London time Thursday).
US authorities contacted air traffic controllers in Cuba, who said the plane might have been hijacked during a domestic flight from the Isle of Youth to Havana.
"Havana indicated that it was a domestic flight with 35 people on board and that it was a possible hijacking," Ms Bergen said.
The plane landed safely at Key West International Airport and 29 passengers and six crew were taken off the aircraft. It was met by agents of the FBI, Border Patrol, Customs and other agencies.
Cuban government aircraft have been stolen or hijacked in the past and flown to Florida by Cubans seeking asylum in the United States.
