Sky Wireless Booster Testing Report

Introduction

The Sky Wireless Booster extends the wireless signal within the home to provide a signal further away from the router.

Sky commissioned Decipher Media Research to independently test how using the Sky Wireless Booster with the Sky Hub could extend the wireless signal provided by Sky Broadband Unlimited customers as compared with the equivalent hubs available with TalkTalk SimplyBroadband, Virgin Media up to 30Mb Broadband and BT Unlimited Broadband.

Decipher Media Research conducted the tests between 10th Oct 2013 and 31st Oct 2013. The tests measured the furthest point away from the hub where the Wi-Fi signal from the router was received. The tests were repeated in the same environment for the various hubs.

Test Methodology

Decipher Media Research tested the signal from following hubs:

  • BT Home Hub 4
  • Virgin Super Hub 2
  • Talk Talk Hub (HG523a)
  • Sky Hub
  • Sky Hub with Sky Wireless Booster

Decipher Media Research conducted the testing in a consumer home on a clear day with minimal Wi-Fi interference and measured the furthest point away from the hub where the Wi-Fi signal was received. The hub was placed near the front door and straight line measurements were taken up to and through glass doors leading out to a garden. If a Wi-Fi signal was received, the distance was increased at regular intervals and tests conducted again. The distance at which no Wi-Fi signal was available from the hub was recorded as the absolute range. For tests including the Sky Wireless Booster, the Wireless Booster was placed close to the door leading into the garden and tests conducted again till the absolute range was measured.

More than 4000 individual distance measurements were recorded in total with each measurement repeated twice for robustness and to ensure statistical significance in the results. The testing was conducted using the iPerf network diagnostic tool, which is industry recognised for measuring Wi-Fi signals.

Results

The Sky Hub with the Sky Wireless Booster reported the maximum absolute range after the testing. When combined with the Sky Hub, the Sky Wireless Booster extended the Wi-Fi signal by more than 100% further than with the equivalent hubs available with TalkTalk SimplyBroadband, Virgin Media up to 30Mb Broadband and BT Unlimited Broadband.

  • Sky Hub with booster reported a 181% increase in range when compared to ISP A
  • Sky Hub with booster reported a 125% increase in range when compared to ISP B
  • Sky Hub with booster reported a 150% increase in range when compared to ISP C
