  • Please leave your Sky Wireless router turned on for the first ten days so that we can test different broadband speeds and settings on your line.
To test the performance of your line, we will start your Sky Broadband at a low speed on the first day. Over the first ten days we will try to increase your speeds and will then set your line to provide the best speeds supported with a reliable connection. During these first ten days you may notice some variations in speed and your connection may be intermittent at times – this is normal.

For Unlimited, Everyday & Base customers, sign in to www.sky.com/MySky and check the Broadband Service Details section for the current status of testing on your line, and the maximum download and upload speeds your Sky Broadband is set to after testing.

  • Before you order Sky Broadband we will check your phone number to see if you are in a Sky Broadband network area and tell you the approximate download speed your line can support.

Once your Sky Broadband has been activated, to test the performance of your line, we will start your Sky Broadband at a low speed on the first day. Over the first ten days we will try to increase your speeds and will then set your line to provide the best speeds supported with a reliable connection. During these first ten days you may notice some variations in speed and your connection may be intermittent at times – this is normal.

  • Our packages offer a range of speeds for you to surf, and post content to the web. Sky Broadband Base users can download at up to 2Mb per second and upload at up to 400Kb per second. Sky Broadband Everyday users can download at up to 10Mb per second and upload at up to 600Kb per second. Sky Broadband Unlimited users can download at up to 20Mb per second and upload at up to 1.3Mb per second. Connect users can download at up to 8Mb per second and upload at up to 448Kb per second. The actual download and upload speeds that you experience when using the internet will be slower than the Download Speed Estimate for your line. This is because of various factors, including:

    • The Sky Broadband product that you have ordered - for example, if your Download Speed Estimate is up to 4Mb and you order Sky Broadband Base with a Maximum Download Speed of up to 2Mb, the fastest download speed you can achieve would be up to 2Mb.

    • If you are using a wireless connection between your computer and the Sky Wireless router - wireless connections can be affected by interference from thick walls in your home, other electrical items such as baby monitors or cordless phones, and local congestion if there are a number of wireless connections using the same wireless channels (frequency) in your neighbourhood.

    • The number of people that are using the same website as you at the same time, and at peak times (weekday evenings and weekends), the number of people using the internet in the UK and worldwide at the same time – so speeds can vary throughout the day.

    Sky Broadband Connect customers only
You may experience slower speeds during peak times (from 5pm to 12am each day) for certain applications that use up a lot of bandwidth and are not time critical, such as peer-to-peer and newsgroups. This is as a result of Sky’s Traffic Management, which is applied to the Connect network so that we are able to provide a sustainable quality broadband service to our Connect customers.

If you are in the top 2% of Connect customers using an excessive amount of bandwidth and impacting other customers’ experience on the Connect product we may apply more severe restrictions to your speeds for all applications during peak times (from 5pm to 12am each day) – for more details see the Usage Policies section of the Sky Broadband Terms & Conditions.

  • You can check the throughput speed of your Sky Broadband connection by following this process:
    1. Open a web browser window (e.g. Internet Explorer), enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, and press Return.
    2. In the log-in box, enter the username admin and the password sky then click OK.
    3. A results window will appear - the throughput speed is recorded within the Modem section under 'Downstream Connection Speed' and ‘Upstream Connection Speed’.

Note that the Connection speeds refer to the download and upload speeds that are being achieved between your router and Sky’s Broadband equipment in the local telephone exchange. These are not the same as ‘throughput’ or experienced speeds, which will be slower than the connection speed due to other factors that affect speeds.

  • You need a Sky Talk or compatible BT phone line to use Sky Broadband. We will check that you have one when you order Sky Broadband. If you are moving from a different telephone company or have recently moved to a new house, you need to be the registered owner of that telephone line. If you have just moved into a new home, we suggest you wait 24 hours after your telephone line has been activated before signing up for Sky Broadband.

  • Before you join Sky Broadband, contact your existing internet provider and ask them for advice on the best way to move your broadband account without losing service. They may give you a MAC (this is a Migration Authorisation Code to give to your new broadband provider to ensure you can switch) that you can use to switch to Sky. A MAC will help to migrate your broadband service seamlessly from most current providers in a few simple steps, ensuring minimum downtime and maximum service.

In some cases you may not be able to use a MAC to switch to Sky from your current ISP - in that case please check our Switching to Sky pages for more advice.

  • Sky Broadband offers free McAfee Parental Controls for life. This enables you to block websites, set age limits and decide at what time of day your children can go online. Also protects children from viewing offensive images online.

To set up Parental Controls, you will need to be logged into your computer with Administrator rights (check your Windows user settings if you are not sure whether you have Administrator rights or not). You will also need to create non Administrator user accounts for each child who uses the computer – these can be Windows user accounts or McAfee user accounts. If you do not already use Windows user accounts for your children, we recommend you set up McAfee user accounts for them and then select the parental controls you want to apply.

Please note that Parental Controls does not come with anti-virus protection, you will still need to download the full McAfee Security Suite for this and other McAfee services.

  • When you order online, we ask you to enter your main landline number, including the area code. This enables us to check that you have a working BT landline - essential for transferring your services easily to Sky. We can also check to see which Sky Broadband and Sky Talk products your telephone line can support and tell you instantly before you order. If you don't have an active BT compatible line, please call us on 08442 411 076 to see if Sky can arrange to install one for you.

  • No. As a cable customer all you need to do is join Sky TV and follow the steps outlined in our Switching from Cable article. However, if you are with another broadband provider using a BT line, you will need to contact them for your MAC.

Does this help answer your question? Yes No

  • If you are a Virgin Media cable customer you will need to manage the cut off dates for your cable services directly with your provider, and you should be able to ensure that you do not lose service when switching to Sky.

If you are switching from another broadband provider and have provided Sky with a MAC for your Sky Broadband order you should only be without broadband service for 30 minutes to 2 hours on the day of switchover.

If your current broadband service is from a fully unbundled provider (e.g. Talk Talk) you will not be able to use a MAC to switch broadband services as these are not available with fully unbundled services. In this case you will need to order a transfer of your phone services to a BT or Sky Talk phone line first, and then place a Sky Broadband order after your phone line has been activated. Please note you would lose your old broadband service on the day your new phone line is activated, and it will then take another ten days from when you order Sky Broadband to have your new broadband service up and running.
