Using Sky Ticker - application settings

Sky Ticker is easy to use, and you can choose appearance setting to suit your screen size and preferences. To access the Preferences menu, select Options in the Sky Ticker Tool Bar (the collection of icons appearing next to the search box). Using your mouse, hover your screen pointer over a button to see a pop-up balloon telling you what it does.

Choose how Sky Ticker appears on your computer screen

Drag and drop Sky Ticker with your mouse to place it against any side of your computer screen or activate the Options button and select Preferences from the menu that appears to see your options for customising Sky Ticker's appearance.

Highlight or tone down Sky Ticker's presence on your desktop

The best-informed showbiz gossips and current affairs buffs need the latest headlines where they can see them, but sometimes you need to concentrate on something else and you may just want the news quietly ticking by so you can stay informed while you get on with your work. All the display options can be accessed via the Preferences menu.

Tick Keep Sky Ticker in front of other windows for the high-profile foreground mode or uncheck it for the more subtle background mode. When Sky Ticker is in background mode, it will disappear when you turn to another window or application using your mouse (or the keyboard shortcut Alt/Tab for PCs or Command/Tab for Macs). To bring Sky Ticker back to the front, just use the shortcut again to toggle back to the application.

Also in the Preferences menu you'll find the Ticker Opacity slider control with which you can make the ticker almost transparent or completely solid.

Activate the Minimise arrow on the Sky Ticker Tool Bar, or right-click anywhere on the ticker to minimise the ticker to your system tray (the collection of icons at the foot of your screen showing which applications are running). It will keep running, but won't be visible on your screen. To maximise the application again, left-click the icon in the system tray, or right-click it and select show.

Change the scroll speed of Sky Ticker

To customise the speed of Sky Ticker adjust the Ticker Speed slider control in Preferences. You can also pause the ticker by hovering your mouse over a story. Unread stories are displayed again, unless they're older than your chosen age limit.

Get Sky Ticker updates

Sky Ticker has an automated update facility and which checks for updates when the application is loaded and at regular intervals while it's running. If a new version is available, you will be asked whether you want to download it or postpone the update until your computer is restarted. You must have administration rights enabled on your computer to install updates.

Use Sky Ticker offline

If you use Sky Ticker offline, you will see any stories that were available when you were last connected to the internet, but without pictures.

Exit Sky Ticker

To close Sky Ticker, right-click the Sky Ticker icon in your system tray and select Exit or select close cross on the Sky Ticker toolbar. You can restart the application, by selecting the icon on your desktop or choosing Sky Ticker from the list of programs in your Start menu.
