This November, something special will be taking place at London’s
Somerset
House. The venue will be holding a free exhibition in aid of Sky Rainforest Rescue, our
campaign with WWF to help save one billion trees in the Amazon rainforest. The exhibition
will feature the breath-taking work of two internationally recognised
photographers.
It's aptly entitled
Amazon, and it will feature the fine photography of Brazil’s
Sebastião Salgado and Sweden’s
Per-Anders Pettersson. Both have criss-crossed the
globe documenting the rich cultural lives of many of the world’s traditional communities, but each
will bring something completely different and enriching to the show.
Salgado’s work is part of a long-running project of his, called
Genesis
, which has seen him photograph incredible environments untouched by the modern world. Not
only does he capture the eerie beauty of these regions, he also documents the lives of the
indigenous people who have lived there for generations. His contribution to
Amazon will feature previously unseen photographs.
Pettersson’s work is a record of his time with Sky Rainforest Rescue, visiting Brazil’s Acre
state with actress Gemma Arterton. His pictures show, disturbingly, just how much deforestation the
area has already suffered, as well as the project’s progress so far.
Sky and WWF have joined forces to help save one billion trees in the Amazon rainforest and
protect around three million hectares from deforestation. That’s an area of rainforest roughly the
size of Belgium.
By working with local communities and the government in the
Brazilian state of
Acre, Sky Rainforest Rescue aims to help make the forest worth more standing than dead.
Working with people to
protect the
rainforest, this campaign also seeks to improve livelihoods for poor families, protect habitats
for threatened species and combat climate change.
You can get involved in a variety of ways. Whether it’s following the campaign on Facebook,
adopting a jaguar for as little as £3 a month, making a donation or, of course, visiting the
exhibition, there’s so much you can do.
Amazon opens 2 November at Somerset House, East Wing Galleries, and runs until 4 December.
And stay tuned for news of offers as the opening date approaches, too.
