Sure Sky brings you fantastic, don’t-miss TV shows like
Glee and
Burn Notice, but did you know that we're also committed to saving three million hectares of
Amazon rainforest? Or that we have a programme to help at-risk children through school
sports?
We do those things and more. They’re part of what we call the Bigger Picture, which for us means
working toward a better environment, safer, healthier communities, and a flourishing of the
arts.
To make it easy for you to get involved, we’ve set up a number of Facebook pages that we hope
you’ll like and share with your friends. They’re a mine of information and content about the causes
themselves. Take a look for yourself at some of the work we’re doing, like:
Sky Rainforest Rescue: In October 2009, we launched this programme with World
Wildlife Fund and the State Government of Acre, a local government region in Brazil encompassing a
large proportion of the Amazon rainforest. We’ve committed to save 3 million hectares of rainforest
– over 8x the size of Essex – and to help the people who live there. Our Facebook page (
Sky Rainforest Rescue
) is a record of our activities. Alongside must-see info, it also features a charming video
diary from actress Gemma Arteton, who recently visited the region.
Sky Sports Living For Sport: This project aims, thorugh sport, to boost
self-esteem for young people who might otherwise get into trouble. Set up with Youth Sport Trust,
it helps teachers set up programmes that engage 11 – 16-year-olds in need of help, supplying
materials, and even famous athletes to boost motivation. Head over to the
Sky Sports Living
for Sport Facebook page for a record of the how the kids are getting on.
Team Sky: Bike nuts will love our professional cycling team, one of which we hope
will win the Tour de France within the next five years. Pop over to the
Team Sky
Facebook page to follow their progress.
Sky Ride: If you’re not ready to ride a bicycle for a living, please participate
in our annual Sky Rides up and down the country. We want to get one million more people on their
bikes, and so every year we get celebs to join us as we evict cars from of city centres so you get
free rein (or should that be free handlebar?) to freewheel to your heart’s content. See the
Sky
Ride Facebook page for more.
The Hay Festival: We’re proud to be broadcast sponsor and key supporter of the
Guardian Hay Festival, the summer’s pre-eminent event for literature lovers. Bookworms can catch
the spirit at the
Hay Festival Facebook page.
