This summer, don’t leave all the cycling to Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Team Sky’s
courageous Tour de France contingent. Wear your own yellow jersey, or anything you fancy, at a Sky
Ride near you.
This year’s Sky Rides are in high gear, transforming gridlocked city streets into traffic-free
cycling havens. For instance, in June, Southampton welcomed 12,000 eager bike riders to its city
centre for carefree, car-less fun in the sun.
And as TV presenter and Sky Ride ambassador Gethin Jones can testify, Sky Ride Locals are also
in full swing, with a line-up that caters to many different – sometimes rather unusual – interests.
He recently led a Sky Ride Local through the Ribble Valley near Preston that encouraged
participants to sing as loudly as possible for a chance to win two tickets to see hit musical Rock
of Ages in the West End.
So whether you’re big or small, old or young, love baggy old shorts or tight, bright Lycra,
there’s a Sky Ride for everyone. Look out for more citywide events, which continue all summer
across the UK, including Manchester (15 July), Birmingham (19 August) and Edinburgh (8
September).
Plus, there are local rides close to home even if you live in a big town or city and
particularly if you live in London. With the capital’s busy sport schedule this year, there’s loads
happening around parks and places of interest within individual boroughs.
Similarly, Glaswegians of any skill level can get away on two wheels through a series of Sky
Ride Locals, taking in miles of the city’s breathtaking countryside.
And that’s not forgetting the broad range of activities taking place nationwide, like women-only
Breeze rides, serious Ride Strong+ challenges or family-friendly Ride Easy events: you’re sure to
