Tracey Emin, Lennox Lewis and Jeremy Irons are just a few of the notable names lined up to
contribute to Sky Atlantic’s upcoming epic history series
The British. The list also includes Russell Brand, Caitlin Moran, Lily Cole, Dame Helen
Mirren and Lord Robert Winston.
They’ll be on hand to share their views about how Britain’s past has affected the present
day. Joining them will be some of the UK’s most respected historians, scholars and cultural
academics including author Juliet Gardiner, Professor Jeremy Black of the University of Exeter and
Military Times editor Neil Faulkner.
The British will distil 2,000 years of British history into seven spectacular hours of
viewing, brought vividly to life through compelling dramatisation and stunning CGI. It’ll focus on
such momentous developments as the Roman invasion, William Caxton’s printing press, the Great Fire
of London, Mary Seacole’s pioneering nursing and Amy Johnson’s epic flight from the UK to
Australia.
The series is also designed to inspire discussion in classrooms nationwide. There’ll be a wide
range of handy resources available to teachers of 7 – 14-year-olds based on issues raised in each
episode. Materials include flexible teaching plans, photos and specially edited video, all
compatible with interactive whiteboards and available free to download from September.
Teachers can register their interest now at the
National Schools Partnership
website.
