Kashmiri students walk to school in curfew-bound Srinagar on September 27, 2010. Some schools in Indian Kashmir opened September 27, a day after authorities ordered reopening of the educational institutions in the region wracked by months of deadly anti-India protests. However, the attendance was thin and most of the private-run schools ignored the government plea to normalise the educational system which has mostly remained paralysed since the protests began in early June. The protests began on June 11, when a 17-year old student was killed by a police teargas shell. Since then security forces have been accused of killing a total of 107 Kashmiris, mostly teenagers and students.

As violence spread, authorities slapped stringent curfews on most of the region, arrested activists and occasionally ordered the army on to the streets of Srinagar.
